Co-writer Chris Weitz added: "Pinocchio doesn't have to turn into a 'real' flesh-and-blood boy. He is real in that he has learned his lessons and grown a conscience, but there is no need for him to end up a certain way physically for him to prove that.

Collodi's original serial, which was titled Le avventure di Pinocchio: storia di un burattino (“The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet”), was meant to serve as a warning against bad behaviour, and it ended with Pinocchio's fatal hanging.
That is the key difference between these two 2022 versions of Pinocchio. Del Toro's movie is willing to show the flaws in Pinocchio as a son, and in Geppetto as a father, while still showing the love between them while the Disney remake shies away from complex and flawed characters.
Geppetto died of old age, as well as the cricket and Spazzatura. This left Pinocchio marking their graves, offering tributes and then wandering off into the real world -- alone.

Del Toro's Pinocchio is so much darker than Disney's version because it deals with realism, including youth camps where children are taken to be indoctrinated and trained to use weapons.
In Collodi's original story, Pinocchio never gets to the part where he saves Geppetto from the shark; instead, he actually ends up dying. Yes, the real story of Pinocchio is indeed very dark and is meant to serve as a lesson for kids who are naughty.
In this telling, the aging Italian woodcarver Geppetto has a young son who's killed by a falling missile during World War I. Many years later, Geppetto, still distraught, chops down a pine tree in a drunken rage and carves a little puppet boy out of it, as if he could somehow bring his son back.
Geppetto never intended to have a son; he wanted simply to carve a puppet. However, his love made him into Pinocchio's dad despite the puppet's foul antics throughout The Adventures of Pinocchio.
