Famous lawman, James “Wild Bill” Hickok, was shot while gambling at the Saloon #10 in Deadwood, South Dakota. His shooter, Jack McCall, who was able to get away with the shooting by claiming that Hickok had murdered his brother.
On August 2, 1876, McCall walked into Nuttal & Mann's Saloon #10 and point blank shot Wild Bill Hickok in the back of the head while Hickok was playing a hand of poker. McCall claimed he killed Wild Bill to avenge his brother's death.
While Hickok claimed to have killed numerous named and unnamed gunmen in his lifetime, his career as a gunfighter only lasted from 1861 to 1871. Hickok killed only six or seven men in gunfights, according to Joseph G. Rosa, Hickok's biographer and the foremost authority on Wild Bill.
When he died, Wild Bill was holding a pair of aces and eights, that series of cards became known to poker players all around the world as the “Dead Man's Hand.” In 1979, Wild Bill Hickok was inducted as a charter member into the World Series of Poker's Hall of Fame.
Contrary to what you may have seen on the HBO series, it was very unlikely that Bullock and Hickok met, let alone became allies. Although the iconic “good guys” did not share time in Deadwood together, both can still be found in the same history books and museums.
