In California, fashion merchandising student and sorority girl Elle Woods is taken to a local restaurant by her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III. She expects a proposal, but he breaks up with her instead. Intending to become a successful senator, he believes Elle is not "serious" enough for that kind of life.
The anticlimax comes early as old-moneyed, country-club East-Coaster Warner breaks up with Elle because he has to “marry a Jackie, not a Marilyn” to fuel his senatorial ambitions.
Inspired by Elle's integrity and authenticity, Vivian breaks off her relationship with Warner, realizing that he does not value her for who she truly is. In the end, Vivian changes for the better. She becomes an ally and friend to Elle, teaming up with her to expose the manipulative actions of Professor Callahan.
Callahan (the most feared teacher at Harvard) kicks Elle out of class for being unprepared, at the suggestion of classmate Vivienne Kensington. Callahan's TA, Emmett, tries to console Elle, but her mood only worsens when Warner confesses to Elle that Vivienne is his new girlfriend.
When Warner decides to end their relationship before he heads to Harvard Law School, he dismisses Elle as not fitting into his future plans of becoming a powerful lawyer and politician. Devastated by the breakup, Elle decides to prove herself and win Warner back by getting accepted into Harvard Law.
