But before he can approach Ariel, Ursula, disguised as a human girl named Vanessa, arrives and uses Ariel's voice to hypnotize Eric into believing she is the girl who saved his life, causing him to forget all about Ariel.
He has idealized the girl that saved him from a sinking ship, and brought him to shore. In his mind, this mysterious girl has a beautiful voice. When he meets Ariel again, he does not “see” her or recognize her because Ariel no longer has her voice, having sold it to Ursula.
Eric searched for Ariel throughout his kingdom, but failed as he did not know she was a mermaid. He even played Ariel's song to him on his flute, as he felt enchanted with Ariel's singing voice. Later, on the beach, Eric found Ariel who had become human due to making a bargain with the sea witch Ursula.
In the animated movie, when King Triton gives Ariel back her human form, she walks right into Eric's arms. But, for the new version, Eric can be seen missing Ariel at the palace while playing with Max, and she sneaks up on him. It's such a small change, but really shows how much Eric loves Ariel as he hugs her.
She was willing to do anything and she was anxious, but maybe she didn't read it because she can't read. She can sign her name, but didn't bother to learn anything more. Or it is in the contract and it would be cheating. So maybe anytime she tries to write, she can't.
In the movie The Little Mermaid (Clements & Musker, 1989), Ariel displays symptoms of disposophobia, which is defined as the fear of getting rid of things.
However, towards the bottom of the chart are some very young couples, including The Little Mermaid's, Ariel and Eric, who are just 16 and 18, and the youngest, other that Snow White, being Aladdin's Jasmine who is only 15-year-old, who is with 18-year-old Aladdin.

It's suggested that Eric's biological parents died in a shipwreck. We finally meet Prince Eric's mother. In the animated film, we never meet Eric's parents. But the live-action movie introduces audiences to Eric's mother, Queen Selina.
Diversity. Ariel had 3 male animal friends, so they needed to make one a girl. Same reason they made Jock a girl (Jacqueline aka Jacque) in the Lady & The Tramp live-action remake.
However, Prince Eric was going to propose to Vanessa because he was under Ursula's spell. The necklace that contained Ariel's voice was also being used to enchant him into thinking he was in love with Vanessa, even though he had moments of confusion regarding the reasons for his affection.
In The Little Mermaid remake, Scuttle plays a bigger role than in the original. Instead of Scuttle being a male seagull, Scuttle is a northern gannet which is a female seabird. This allowed Scuttle to be included in the underwater scenes which ends up being an important change from the original movie.
The video goes on to talk about how this original concept for Ariel was too close to the Splash mermaid and the designers wanted to differentiate Ariel, so her red hair was born. We can't imagine Ariel without her red hair, but not everyone felt the same way back in the 80s.
