Unfortunately he could do nothing to help her, as he needed to pretend that he was truly loyal to Voldemort, and any attempt to save Charity would have resulted in both of them being killed.
He could not do so openly, because she was in a magical cage to protect her from harm. Despite the fact that Snape is a talented wizard, he took too long to protect himself – because he was not even attempting a defensive spell. He was collecting his strength to attack Nagini in her cage.
She was certainly no ordinary snake. While Arthur lived to tell the tale, others were not so lucky. Lord Voldemort callously fed Muggle Studies teacher Charity Burbage to Nagini after performing the Killing Curse.
Professor Burbage affronts Voldemort and his Death Eaters by teaching that Muggles are not so different from wizards, and by daring to publish "an impassioned defence of Mudbloods" in the Daily Prophet. As a result, she is kidnapped by Death Eaters and summarily executed by Voldemort.

Charity Burbage floats helplessly above a dinner table, as if paralysed. She begs Snape to help her. Voldemort point his wand at her, and a green light erupts out of its end. The light hits Charity, and she falls down on to the table dead, her eyes open and her face splattered with droplets of blood.

At this point, McGonagall begins to gain the upper hand as it becomes clear he cannot further transfigure or counter her attack, so the only way he avoids it is by taking refuge behind a suit of armour that he forces in front of him.
Why didn't Snape tell Harry he was protecting him?
Snape even said that he didn't want anyone to find out that he was protecting Lily's child, “especially Potter's son” (pg. 679 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) because of his hatred for James. Instead of providing Harry a safe haven from his abusive home with the Dursleys, he tormented Harry over an old grudge.
Why did the Killing Curse work on Harry but not Nagini?
As long as Voldemort lives, Nagini is invulnerable to mortal death except by the methods known to destroy Horcruxes: basilisk venom or fiendfyre. It works differently with Harry because he is not a true Horcrux.
McGonagall later learned that Snape was secretly Harry's protector and had killed Dumbledore at Dumbledore's request. McGonagall then made a controversial decision to add Snape's portrait in the Headmaster's Office as a testament to his bravery.
Hedwig's killer is not explicitly identified, so he/she may have appeared in other books, films or video games, but the only known appearance is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. A popular fan theory based on book canon suggests that Snape may have killed Hedwig.
Although he redeems himself, Snape easily fits into a crowd of misfits pushed to the fringes of magical society. He may have even felt something like a kinship with them. Although Snape ultimately betrays the Death Eaters, he nevertheless made the conscious effort to join them all those years earlier.
Assuming it is the case, evil nature of Nagini's snake half who later joined Voldemort is easily attributed to the loss of humanity which ended up in her human half reminiscent to Urizen who bereft of his true self Vergil's humanity which ended up in his other half V.
Behind the scenes. When Harry and Hermione are on the first floor of Bathilda's house, Nagini (inside the corpse of Bathilda) tells Harry to 'Come! ' from the next room in Parseltongue. In reaction, Hermione jumps and clutches Harry's arm, and the two of them obey the command.
Ultimately, however, Nagini's Maledictus blood curse took over, which forced her to stay in her snake form permanently. Parseltongue: Nagini, due to her Maledictus transformation into a snake, gained the ability to speak the language of serpents, while remaining in snake form.
The movies follow the books closely enough that they aren't really separate universes, except for the fourth movie. There isn't any truly compelling evidence that Snape is Harry's father, because all the points you raise are explained. Snape hated Harry because Harry reminded him of the man who "stole" Lily.
Family. Snape's family background is mostly shown in flashbacks during the course of the last three novels. Snape was born to Eileen Prince, a witch, and Tobias Snape, a Muggle, making him a half-blood (hence the name, "Half-Blood Prince").
