This sacred message shows Neytiri that Eywa has chosen Jake as some kind of special person. Thus, the seeds represent Jake's heroic destiny, the fact that he is being watched over by the goddess, and that he plays an important role with the Na'vi.
Neytiri was going to kill Jake until she received a sign from Eywa, the deity who the Na'vi worships. When a group of woodsprites, spirits from the Na'vi's sacred tree, land on Jake, Neytiri considers it a sign and brings him back to her home.
Known to the Na'vi as atokirina, the Woodsprites are seeds from the Tree of Souls. The Na'vi revere the woodsprites and consider them bearers of omens and signs of sanctity. While woodsprites have the appearance of Earth jellyfish, they float in the wind similar to dandelion seeds.
Suddenly, dozens of woodsprites appear and land on Jake's body. Neytiri, amazed, recognizes the woodsprites' actions as a sign and decides to take Jake to her village to allow Mo'at, the Omatikaya clan's Tsahìk (spiritual leader), to interpret the will of Eywa and decide what should be done with Jake.
It's quite obvious from seeing the Pure Spirits prevent Neytiri from killing Jake on the spot that Eywa sees great potential in Jake from the beginning.
After their death, a deceased Na'vi's remains are laid to rest by their clan's traditional method. For example, while one clan may bury bodies under a tree, another clan lets their banshees eat their corpses.
Shortly after the events of the Avatar, Jake has the Na'vi give his human body a traditional burial and moves the Omaticaya Clan near Hell's Gate to be close to the human allies who were allowed to stay on Pandora. Two weeks later, Jake still visits his former body's burial site, envisioning himself as a human.

In the film's closing scene, the Na'vi transfer Jake into the avatar body permanently, eradicating his disability and neatly delivering him from his original role as a white colonizer.
After Neytiri kills Quaritch, she holds Jake's avatar body and realizes that he isn't there. She rushes into the link shack and finds Jake's real body lying on the floor, unconscious. She holds him in her arms and puts an exopack on his face, saving his life.

The "braid" that comes from the base of their skulls is not hair, it is an extension of their nervous system. Nerve tissue does not regenerate in most species, so cutting this would be amputation not a "haircut".
