Percy's relationship with him is worse than he has with any other Olympian. In The Lightning Thief, the two dueled resulting in Percy's victory and Ares' hate towards Percy to increase. Unfortunately, if Ares tries to kill Percy, he will fall out of the favor of his girlfriend Aphrodite, who takes a liking to Percy.
Ares wants war, so he framed Percy as the culprit in order to achieve a three-way war against Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades. He explains that magic similar to that in Riptide, the sword, was used on the backpack, so that the bolt would appear in the backpack once Percy entered the Underworld.

Annabeth reveals that Medusa and Poseidon were former lovers (also mentioned in Percy Jackson's Greek Gods). Since Percy is Poseidon's son, Medusa does not want him to suffer. Yet, when Percy and his friends decide to fight her, she attacks him and gets killed in the process.
Percy Jackson was able to wound Ares, defeat Hades, and nearly defeat a weakened Hyperion all in physical combat, through use of his own powers, or some combination. However, at least the more powerful gods in their divine form or in full use of their powers are too powerful to be defeated by a demigod.
