Cato's competitive nature is even more extreme than those of his fellow Careers, as he harbors a deep resentment of Katniss due to her high training score and iterates to his allies that he must be the one to kill her.
Morning finally comes and Katniss is able to see Cato below. Out of pity, she uses her last arrow to end Cato's life. The cannon fires and the muttations retreat, but Peeta and Katniss must place distance between themselves and Cato's body before the hovercraft will come, so they move to the lake.
Why does Katniss think Cato has a special hatred for her?
According to Katniss, why does Cato have a special hatred for her? Katniss thinks Cato hates her because she beat his score during their training session. How do the Gamemakers drive the tributes together?
As he does so, Cato cuts his way through the brush and realizes what Peeta has done. Enraged at Peeta's betrayal, Cato engages the other tribute in a fight, a fight which Peeta swiftly loses, escaping only with a severe leg wound, tracker jacker strings, and burns retained from the fire.
Feeling no excitement or adrenaline rush or even pride but only fear, not the fear of the games but of loneliness. All that he knew what to do was kill, but now that he had the chance to win it all he only felt dead. No purpose, no excitement. Just Dead.
In the novel, Cato makes two confirmed kills: the District 3 male and Thresh. In the film, he makes four additional kills during the bloodbath: the District 4 male, the District 5 male, the District 6 male, and the District 10 male.
Cato releases Peeta and falls off of the Cornucopia. The dogs immediately attack him. When Katniss realizes that the dogs intend to kill Cato slowly, she fires her last arrow at Cato, putting him out of his misery. His death marks the end of the 74th Hunger Games.
He survives the encounter with Cato but suffers a stab wound on his leg. He camouflages himself into the rocks and mud alongside a riverbank, slowly dying of blood poisoning until Katniss finds him days later.
In the film, Thresh's odds of winning change from 10–1 to 11–1. Afterward, they increase from 11–1 to 8–1. In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, Katniss states that Cato killed Thresh. However, this is not in-line with the film continuity, as Thresh was killed by the wolf mutts in the first film.
In the case of Johanna, they each hated each other because that was what the Capitol had taught them to do. They were from competing Districts, and the idea of the Games was to keep the lesser citizens of Panem distrustful of one another and unwilling to form alliances (or raise arms in war).
Before she takes the stage that night, Haymitch hugs Katniss and gives her a message. He says, “Listen up, You're in trouble. Word is the Capital's furious about you showing them up in the arena… Your only defense can be you were so madly in love you weren't responsible for your actions” (Collins 357).
Personality. Cato is extremely arrogant, savage, cold, cruel, sadistic, destructive, ruthless, and violent to an extreme. He has been trained his entire life in the Career Academy to become a ruthless and powerful warrior and survivor.
In the film, Glimmer acts flirtatiously toward Cato. They talk and joke around the fire, she sleeps beside him that night, and even snuggles into his arm. However, the relationship is largely one-sided, and Cato leaves her to die to the tracker jackers.
Effie is the escort from the Capitol who has been assigned to District 12. Gale and Katniss make fun of her affected Capitol accent and how she is overly enthusiastic about the Hunger Games, a truly violent and grim event.
Katniss rarely sings because it reminds her of her father, but she now remembers a morbid song that her father taught her: “The Hanging Tree.” This moment in the story is significant in multiple ways.
It is so rare that we see a main character in mainstream media who has a disability that is not a focus of the story, and this is why I was so disappointed in the movie. In the book, Peeta is an amputee, but that is merely a part of who he is and does not take over the storyline in any way, shape, or form.
On March 23, 2011, Lionsgate began casting the role of Peeta for the film of The Hunger Games. According to The Hollywood Reporter, contenders for the role included Josh Hutcherson, Alexander Ludwig (later cast as Cato), Hunter Parrish, Lucas Till, and Evan Peters.
These wolf-like mutts are not just murderous creatures created to kill those remaining but horrific monsters that resemble the now-dead tributes. The wolf-like mutts act as a physical representation of how the remaining tributes have themselves become murderous monsters throughout the course of the game.
While a prisoner of the Capitol, Peeta was hijacked into believing that Katniss was not human, but in fact one of the Capitol's mutts. Conversely, Johanna Mason suggested that the Capitol's torture replaced Peeta with an "evil-mutt version" of himself. This sentiment was later echoed by Katniss.
The films, trying to be as faithful to the source material as possible, naturally had to include Finnick's death as well. In this sense, Finnick is the perfect candidate for upping the stakes of the plot via his death, as his hope for a future with his partner Annie made his demise seem even more untimely.
Glimmer's death occurs by chance. Katniss drops a tracker jacker nest on the Career Tributes' camp while they are sleeping, and Glimmer is stung to death before she can get away. Marvel is the first person that Katniss intentionally kills. After Marvel kills Rue, Katniss' friend, Katniss shoots Marvel in retribution.
The following year after Lucy Gray Baird's victory, another female tribute emerged as the Hunger Games winner. Mags Flanagan became the first victor from District 4, living off of nuts and her survival skills by creating fishhooks. She was also the first victor to move to Victor's Village before serving as a mentor.
