Kratos attempted to defend his brother, but he was still a child, leading him to easily being defeated by Ares. He even got a scar over his eye in the process. Following this, Kratos got tattoos in honor of Deimos in his birthmarks.

Why does Kratos hate the Blades of Chaos?
Widely feared throughout Greece, the Blades of Chaos personified what Kratos had become during the darkest period of his life: a monster who killed his own family out of bloodlust, turning him into the infamous Ghost of Sparta.
Young, Greek Pantheon-slaying Kratos' rage stemmed from guilt and grief. His own pride and lust for power led to his most criminal act: the murder of his wife and daughter. Though he was tricked into committing the act, the fact that his hands did the deed never left him. He never forgave himself for it.
Kratos then joined the Spartan army in Rhodes, intent on destruction. Zeus, however, weakens Kratos and tricks him into abandoning his godly powers into the Blade of Olympus, which Zeus uses to kill him. Although he overcame all obstacles, Kratos was stunned at Zeus's betrayal and swore revenge as he died.
Although Kratos never gets to wield the hammer, given his own extraordinary godly strength that slightly surpassed even that of Thor and even being able to hold Mjolnir back with his bare hands when Thor threw it at him, it's very likely that Kratos would be fully capable of using the hammer if he wanted to.
