Since watching Aurora over her childhood years, Maleficent soon grew a maternal love for her. One day Aurora thought that Maleficent was her faerie godmother and often visited the Moors while Maleficent tried to stop the curse but she herself had said no power on Earth could cure it apart from true love's kiss.
Maleficent confirms that Aurora will grow in grace and beauty, "beloved by all who know her", but as revenge for not being invited by the kingdom, she curses Aurora so that before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel's spindle and die.
Princess Aurora is not actually a blood relative of Maleficent – in fact the Princess is the daughter of King Stefan and Queen Leila. However she is the adopted daughter of Maleficent – who is protector of the Moors in the franchise, and is portrayed as a tragic, rather than evil, character.
It's a significant departure that Aurora (Elle Fanning) is awakened not by a kiss from Prince Phillip (Brenton Thwaites), but instead by a kiss from the villainous Maleficent (Angelina Jolie).
However, they were right, the kiss from Philip didn't work, for it wasn't true love. Who really saves Aurora is Maleficent, in which Dival, Maleficent's crow sidekick, describes, “there's no truer love.” I think he is talking about the maternal relationship that Maleficent had with Aurora.
In fact, his obsessive hatred for Maleficent overruled his love for anyone else, even his dying wife and his own daughter, whom he neglects after meeting her for the first time.
Later, Stefan betrays Maleficent and steals her wings so he could claim that he killed her and become king. After the painful loss of her wings, Maleficent becomes enraged over his treachery, and as her heart of gold turns to stone, she becomes the evilest magical being in the land.
She tearfully apologizes to her sleeping goddaughter and gives her a farewell kiss on the forehead. However, just before she can walk away, a miracle happens: Aurora wakes up. Maleficent's strong and genuine motherly love for Aurora was enough to break the curse that she herself had cast.
On Maleficent's sixteenth birthday, Stefan kissed her. However, after some period of time after this, he didn't come to see Maleficent. Stefan later betrayed her and stole her wings, so he would be able to become the new king. Stefan later married Leila, Henry's daughter, and she became his wife and queen.
After saving his life, Diaval promises Maleficent he will be her humble servant as a gratitude. Maleficent and Diaval have been together for twenty-one years now.
Aurora is officially Queen of the Moors and rules the tranquil kingdom kindly and fairly. But when Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) asks Aurora to marry him, all of Maleficent's fears of losing her adopted daughter come to the surface.
Even though Maleficent is a heroine, she is still presented as a satanic figure. Her iconic horns (which Disney artist Marc Davis, who designed Maleficent, says were inspired by the traditional look of the devil, to “frighten everybody half to death”) are present even before Stefan's betrayal.
Maleficent : Before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel, and fall into a sleep like death! A sleep from which she will *never* awaken!
Maleficent is a movie about how complex good and evil can be. It shows that good people can often follow dark paths because of trauma beyond their control. It highlights the importance of forgiveness, the beauty of friendship and relationships, and the struggle people might have to be decent in a troubled world.
And in an interview with the BBC Radio Hour, Jolie has confirmed that's what she and screenwriter Linda Woolverton had in mind: “We were very conscious, the writer and I, that it was a metaphor for rape,” Jolie said. At Femamom, Hayley Kirscher wrote that Sharlto Copley's Stefan “doesn't kill her.
“At first, she has beautiful, flowing hair but when she gets older and more bitter, she is more scary. She's hiding her hair and we put headwraps on her, which are a very, very important part of her costume. …
Some people might hate Maleficent for her villainous beginnings, which makes sense. Some people hate this new era of Disney and don't like the idea of turning villains into less villainous versions of themselves. They like the classics and don't like what Disney is doing with them.
She is an evil fairy and the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil” who, after not being invited to a christening, curses the infant Princess Aurora to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” before the sun sets on Aurora's sixteenth birthday.
In the first Maleficent movie, Stefan becomes Maleficent's first love, but after she fights against the King's Army the king orders for someone to kill her in order to become the heir to the throne.
When the dark fairy's curse is at last fulfilled, despite her efforts to renounce it, Maleficent herself (rather than Phillip) breaks the spell with a remorseful kiss on Aurora's brow.
Maleficent takes flight and Stefan falls to his death, a victim of his own unrelenting desire for power and revenge. Maleficent soon undoes the dark magic in the Moors, restoring its former light and beauty. The Moors and the human kingdom are now united, and Aurora is crowned Queen of both kingdoms.
