In Mickey's Cabin, Pete's partner-in-crime was his own cousin, Zeke. At some point in his life, Pete lost one of his legs by unknown means, and had it replaced with a wooden peg. He would go on to adopt the moniker "Peg-Leg Pete".
Since Steamboat Willie, Pete appeared in 31 cartoons. In the earliest cartoons he had a peg leg, but that was dispensed with in his later appearances when the animators found it too hard to handle in the stories.

Why did Walt Disney not like Goofy?
According to biographer Neal Gabler, Walt Disney disliked the Goofy cartoons, thinking they were merely "stupid cartoons with gags tied together" with no larger narrative or emotional engagement and a step backward to the early days of animation.
Peg might have feelings for Goofy as revealed in the episode "Goofin up the Social Ladder" in which she kisses him. Peg is the first series regular of any Disney series to be voiced by April Winchell.
After Goofy debunked his parenting advice, Pete became rather spiteful and vindictive, as he later relished in having the chance to prove that Max (as a result of Goofy's attempts to form a friendly bond) was a manipulative "bad kid".
