In the film's final 20-minutes, we begin to understand that Quint is, indeed, a man on a mission. His attempt to draw the shark into shallow waters is foiled by his pride as, rather than listen to Hooper, he destroys the engine of the ORCA.
Why was Quint in the movie Jaws so rash? Sam Quint was rash because of a life of events which shaped him into that man: He developed a fear and hatred for sharks when the USS Indianapolis sank, and he was stranded in the ocean with a thousand other sailors for days on end.
Although the fact that Quint is expecting a massive payday for killing the shark isn't mentioned again after this scene, the idea of Quint destroying the radio to prevent others from claiming his bounty is perfectly reasonable.
Who is Brody trying to call when Quint smashes the radio in jaws?
In the morning, Brody attempts to call the Coast Guard, but Quint, obsessed with killing the shark without outside assistance, smashes the radio. After a long chase, Quint harpoons the shark with another barrel.
He tries kicking at the Shark but to no avail. Gaining the advantage, the shark bit down on one of Quint's legs, moving quickly up to his waist. Screaming in pain, Quint grabs a machete and stabs the fish with it but to no avail. With one final crunch, Quint spits up blood and is quickly dragged under the waves, dead.
In fact, as he referred to the great white when first approached by Hooper and Brody inside his boathouse, he is calling it a "porker" - slang term for "big & white" - but with his accent it sounds similar to "orca". During the barrel scene, the shark pulls three barrels underwater.
Freudian commentators consider the shark a phallic symbol demonstrating everything from the destructiveness of masculinity to the impotence of modern man to castration fears (source). Quint certainly gets castrated in the shark attack, along with losing most of his other parts.
"So, eleven hundred men went into the water, three hundred sixteen men come out, and the sharks took the rest. But we delivered the bomb." - Quint. When it comes to cinematic soliloquies, Quint's telling of the aftermath of the USS Indianapolis remains one of the all-time greats.
Roy Scheider, who played Police Chief Martin Brody in the first two films, laughed at the thought of Jaws 3, saying that "Mephistopheles ... couldn't talk me into doing [it] ... They knew better than to even ask". He agreed to do the film Blue Thunder to ensure his unavailability for Jaws 3-D.
The daddy of all yellow signifies in Jaws is of course the yellow barrels. These were a necessity to indicate the shark when he wasn't working and showcased his presence without the need to show a dorsal fin or the shark emerging from the water.
It is identified as a removed tattoo for the USS Indianapolis, a real life Navy ship sunk during WWII that was known for the amount of shark attacks inflicted upon the survivors. It's this story – Quint's time stranded at sea told in an amazing monologue – that reveals so much about the character.
The most ironic part of his past was that Martin was terrified of the water. When his wife tried to explain the clinical term for his fear to Matt Hooper, Brody quickly dismissed it as simply a fear of drowning. This fear seemingly stemmed from a near-drowning experience when he was a child.
One such local Hershel West (below), an extremely shy fisherman was gently coaxed into playing Quint's mate, Salvatore. Living on a boat called the Jesatoma when casting of locals began, Hershel lived a quiet life mostly keeping himself to himself.
Dreyfuss was not saddled to this sequel as Scheider was, and he certainly didn't need to reprise his role; he had become an in-demand star and was busy leading other films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Goodbye Girl, in which he won a Best Actor Oscar.
In the 30th anniversary DVD edition of the film, all the movie remains the same except for Brody's final encounter with the shark. His famous line is cut, thus, only letting him says, "Smile, you son of a..." before he fires the gun.
It has none of the redeeming qualities that made the original Jaws such a classic movie. Instead, there is a ludicrous storyline filled with unnecessary scenes that attempt a slow build while you're getting to know the characters. The dialogue is hilariously bad, and the special effects are even worse.
How did an on-set in-joke become one of the most iconic lines in cinema history? “You're gonna need a bigger boat,” says awestruck Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), the words half-mumbled through the cigarette dangling from his mouth.
Quint calls Hooper an idiot as Hooper pilots the boat to follow whatever's on the end of Quint's hook. Suddenly he realizes that it's gone under the boat. It's a very smart, very big shark, he says, but Hooper doubts it.
