Disney's relationship with the Avatar franchise dates all the way back to the year 2011. That year James Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment company along with 21st Century Fox entered an exclusive licensing agreement with The Walt Disney Company to feature Avatar attractions at the Disney Parks worldwide.
Avatar became part of the Disney umbrella after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, which had an output deal for new movies to head directly to Max after being released in theaters, according to The Direct. Avatar: The Way of Water was one of several movies made under this deal before Disney's acquisition went through.
On September 17, 2011, Disney entered into an exclusive, long-term licensing agreement with Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox for the worldwide theme park rights to Avatar; Disney agreed to pay Cameron and 20th Century a licensing fee and a percentage of merchandise sales.
At the time, 20th Century agreed to allow its movies to stream exclusively on HBO Max, the Warner Bros. streaming platform, because 20th Century didn't have one of its own. However, now that the studios is owned by Disney, it still has to honor its deal with Warner.
The $531.7 million profit makes Cameron's sequel undoubtedly a huge success, and this number doesn't include the additional revenue generated by the movie's presence at Disney theme parks.
