At the end of Part III, Michael dies alone in the yard of his Sicilian villa. The death of his daughter, Mary, has sealed his fate, severing his ties forever with the rest of the family, the family that he tried to save and bring to legitimacy.
What happened to Michael at the end of Godfather 3?
Michael cradles Mary's body and screams in agony; the scene fades out into a montage of Michael dancing with Mary; Apollonia; and finally, Kay. Years later, an elderly Michael, sitting alone in the courtyard of Don Tommasino's villa, slumps over, falls to the ground, and dies. The ending of the Coda cut is different.
Why does Michael lie to Kay at the end of The Godfather?
Of course Michael had good reasons to lie. The biggest was to protect Kay. What Kay did not know could not hurt her. Because Michael left her out of the Family business, nobody had reason to kidnap her or toture her to extract information.

According to The Godfather Part III, Hagen has already died before the time frame of the film, which is 1979–1980. There is no specific indication in the film as to when or how he died, except that it was prior to his son, Andrew (John Savage), being ordained a Roman Catholic priest.
Al Pacino was offered $5 million to reprise his role as Michael. But Pacino wanted $7 million plus a percentage of the gross. Francis Ford Coppola refused. He threatened to rewrite the script by starting the story with Michael's funeral sequence instead of the film's introduction.

Betrayal. While in Havana, Michael learned that Fredo betrayed him when Fredo accidentally let it slip that he and Johnny Ola had been to a sex show in Havana. He confronted Fredo at a New Year's party in Havana, telling Fredo that he knew he was the traitor and giving him the "kiss of death".
