In a town known as Santa Cecilla, a kid Miguel dreams of becoming a musician. Even though his family strictly forbids it and has banned music in their house. The ban was placed because Miguel's great-great-grandmother Imelda was married to a man who left her and their daughter Coco to pursue a career in music.
Due to intense disapproval from Abuelita, music of any kind is not allowed to be performed or enjoyed in their household. Despite this, Miguel has a secret hideout where he listens to the record albums of his musical hero Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), the most beloved singer in Mexico before his tragic death.
The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a musician like his great-great-grandfather Ernesto de la Cruz, a popular singer-songwriter who died when he was crushed by a bell in a live concert. Because De la Cruz abandoned his family for fame, music has been banned in Miguel's household.
