Abused and bullied in his youth, he develops an obsession with fear and uses a specially designed hallucinogenic drug–dubbed "fear toxin"–to exploit the phobias of the people of Gotham City and its protector, Batman.
His background is similar to his comic book counterpart; he is portrayed as a psychiatrist who is obsessed with fear, and who was fired from his teaching job for experimenting on his students. He sought revenge on the superiors who fired him, using his Fear Toxin.

Jonathan Crane is a doctor and was also a professor of psychology before getting fired, which was the catalyst for him turning into Scarecrow. He decided he'd embrace the nickname he'd gotten for being scrawny and wearing shabby clothes by becoming a symbol of 'poverty and fear'.
Even though Killer Croc was the one who mutilated him, Scarecrow solely blames Batman for his near-death experience and never takes into consideration that he willingly yet ignorantly went into Croc's lair in the first place, thus making him a deluded hypocrite. He's also more than deserved it for all his actions.
