Before leaving for the seasonal break, the Overlook's head chef, Dick Hallorann, informs Danny of a telepathic ability the two share, which he calls "shining". Hallorann tells Danny that the hotel also has a "shine", due to residue from unpleasant past events, and warns him to avoid Room 237.
The title was inspired by the 1970 John Lennon song "Instant Karma!", which contained the line "We all shine on". Bill Thompson, King's editor at Doubleday Publishing, tried to talk him out of The Shining because he thought that after writing Carrie and 'Salem's Lot he would get "typed" as a horror writer.
Moments later, he would improvise the “Here's Johnny!” line, which was a reference to the intro of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Interestingly, Kubrick originally shot the scene with a fake door, but Nicholson – who once trained as a fire marshal – chopped it down too quickly.
In it, Blakemore claims that the film serves as a metaphor for the killing of Native Americans. His theory has some decent support behind it, and it is one of the few that make the most sense. One aspect of the film that wasn't present in the book was that the Overlook was built upon a Native American burial ground.
Near the end of Stephen King's The Shining book, it's revealed that Tony is actually Danny Torrance's future adult self. It's also revealed that Danny's middle name is Anthony, explaining why exactly Tony is called that.

The family has to care for the hotel for the winter, but they cannot leave the mountainous area. In this isolation every day becomes the same for Jack as his writer's block becomes quotidian. The combination of isolation, monotony, creative frustration, and supernatural forces extract Jack's insanity.
In the novel, Danny is the Overlook's primary victim, and Jack Torrance is simply used as a conduit to get to Danny. The hotel wants Danny dead so that it can absorb his “shining” ability to add to the Overlook's plethora of dark energies, so it possesses Jack in his vulnerable state to try to kill Danny.
The woman in King's novel is Lorraine Massey, who used to seduce bellboys and engage in sexual acts with them. Lorraine was the wife of a prominent New York lawyer, but during her stay at the Overlook, she was with a younger man.
Danny tries to stay away from Room 237, but curiosity gets the better of him, and Mrs. Massey assaults him before he's able to get away. It further explains how Mrs. Massey is able to appear to Danny later in life.
As such, Grady has always been the butler, just as Jack has always been the caretaker insofar as they were both imprisoned in the future by the hotel, and their spirits became anachronistically part of history.
Kubrick gives the viewer a clue when Wendy is experiencing a hallucination using the camera's placement. According to the theory, when the camera is facing the back of the characters, the perspective of the story shifts into Wendy's perception of reality.
It's made very clear from the beginning that he was a drunk and a violent husband and father. He seems to go to the closed down hotel in hopes to get sober, since there's no booze at the hotel when it's closed. However.. We also see how cold he treats his family during the ride up to the hotel.

Danny Torrance is introduced in The Shining as the five-year-old son of Jack and Wendy Torrance. He has psychic powers that fellow psychic Dick Halloran calls “shining” – he can read people's thoughts, communicate telepathically with others who “shine”, and has frequent, frightening prophetic visions.
Jack becomes obsessed enough with the hotel's sordid past that he wants to write a book about it. He makes a long-distance call to the hotel's manager, Stuart Ullmann, and antagonizes him with this knowledge. Eventually, he goes mad thanks to the influence of the hotel's ghosts and attempts to kill Wendy and Danny.
After a corpse tries to strangle Danny in the infamous room 217 and Wendy and Jack see the resulting bruise on their son's neck, Wendy accuses Jack of abusing Danny.
The hotel wanted young Danny to die inside its grounds so that it could feed on him, and after he unleashes the ghosts from their boxes, they start to feed on him as well.
The ending of The Shining, particularly the photo of Jack in the 1921 ballroom, suggests that Jack is a reincarnation of a former hotel employee, although this explanation is not explicitly stated in the film. The Shining explores themes of cyclical violence and abuse, and Kubrick's film is full...
The film's final shot zooms into an old picture hanging in the hotel's hallway, of guests attending a ball on July 4, 1921. Standing front and center is Jack, smiling right into the camera. Kubrick has explicitly stated that the photograph suggests the reincarnation of Jack, possibly of a guest or staff member.
Danny even manages to anticipate what is about to happen by writing “redrum” on the bathroom door because this is where the murder will take place. The separation of Danny's alter ego voices into manifestations of Tony and Jack, through the presence / absence of his wagging finger, fits very well throughout the film.
It is stated that the Overlook Hotel was made out of evil because it is composed of negative influence from a history of deaths, giving it moral agency issues. Its history of crime caused by the negativity is also confirmed, unlike the 1980 film adaptation and 2019 sequel.
This further confirms that the powers known as "the Shine" may well be hereditary, and Danny Torrance's most likely came from Jack, who appears to be particularly sensitive to the Overlook Hotel's mental probing.
