Lambeau leaves, and Sean and Will talk and it comes to light that they were both victims of child abuse. Sean helps him see that he is a victim of his own inner demons and to accept that it is not his fault, causing him to break down in tears in Sean's arms.
His conflict comes from the fact that he dreads isolation (a fear of being abandoned again) whilst also craving liberty (taking responsibility and becoming the author of his own life). He knows that taking responsibility and going towards fulfilling his potential would mean having to face the risk of abandonment.

Nevertheless, Good Will Hunting is a wonderful exploration of the flaws in the American education system, the isolation of academia, and the personal journey of a young man who learns to accept himself and relate to the people who care for him.

Will is an orphan who was born and raised in South Boston, and suffered severe physical abuse at the hands of his foster father, who finally stabbed him, nearly killing him. Will bounced around a series of other, dysfunctional foster homes before finally living on his own at age 18.
