Katniss has a conflicted relationship with her mother. Following her father's death, her mother fell into deep depression and now rarely speaks. As a result, Katniss has a difficult time feeling love and affection for her mother, even as she recognizes that her mother is a kind and intelligent woman.
After being abandoned by her mother for months after her father's death, Katniss does not trust her and has never really forgiven her. Katniss has also taken over the mothering role of Prim. After volunteering, Katniss tells Mrs. Everdeen that she has to take care of Prim, which her mother promises to.
Katniss and Prim's mother is from a wealthier merchant class within District 12, but she moved to the Seam to marry their father for love. When her husband dies in a mining accident, however, she falls into a daze, unable to work and take care of her children.
The death of her father appears to cause severe depression in her mother. This leaves 11-year-old Katniss as the sole carer of her mother and younger sister.
Why couldn t Katniss mother take care of Katniss and her sister?
Katniss's mother becomes deeply depressed after her husband's sudden death and cannot take care of her children. She was raised as a market-owner's daughter, so she doesn't have that mental "toughness" that the Seam people have.
She was only 13 years old when she was killed in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and her youth only makes the tragedy that much harder for Katniss to bear after everything else she had suffered. Prim's death is a truly heartbreaking moment.

Later, Katniss learned that Mr. Mellark had once been in love with her mother but that the woman had chosen a boy from the Seam—Katniss' father—instead. This completely changed Katniss' perspective of Peeta's family. She realized that Mr.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Katniss loves her mother but resents the fact that she had to grow up so quickly and become the family provider at such a young age. As a result it is hard for her to trust people and she has all these walls up as I think she doesn't want to feel vulnerable and dependent on anyone.
Their relationship was all friends. They trusted each other, but that doesn't mean they had romantic feelings for each other. Plus, Cinna's too old for Katniss.
How The Hunger Games Three-Finger Salute Evolved Throughout The Series. During The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the three-fingered salute is still used as a gesture of goodbye, but also comes to represent the anger and grief people feel toward the Capitol at taking their children to be killed.
How did Katniss relationship with her mother change?
How had Katniss's relationship with her mother changed? She couldn't forgive her mother, so Katniss had a "wall" between them--never really allowing her mother in or relying on her mother for survival.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
However, after Mrs. Mellark reentered the bakery, Katniss witnessed her scolding and beating Peeta after he burnt two loaves of bread and telling him to feed them to the pigs just before disappearing to help a customer. She was not supportive of Peeta when his name was drawn to compete in the 74th Hunger Games.
His mother is very sour and is known to hit Peeta, hard enough to leave marks. I believe it is mentioned that Peeta is the youngest and has older brothers, but the most we hear of them is that he comes in second in wrestling and his brother takes first. Peeta also says his family doesn't really need him.
Like the film's portrayal of Katniss' hearing loss, Peeta's leg injury is shown on screen. Due to an earlier leg injury, he is unable to outrun the mutts as easily as Katniss and can't climb to safety as smoothly as she can.
The Hunger Games series, much like Harry Potter is for young adults, and the themes and motivations are not hard to understand. Katniss NEVER hated Peeta. She figured she'd have to kill him to survive and had no desire to like him because of that.
Tracker jacker venom is used to associate fear with certain memories, and to alter those memories with hallucinations. It is difficult, but not impossible, to fully cure. It was most notably used on Peeta Mellark during the rebellion in Mockingjay.
While Prim is caring for the wounded, a second set of bombs go off, killing her, along with everyone around her. This act of treachery and shameless targeting of the innocent is what finally turns President Snow's guards against him. They believe he is to blame, when in reality, Alma Coin was responsible.
Katniss even mentions that Prim is a beloved person throughout District 12, someone who “no one can help loving.” In the first book of the Hunger Games series, Prim's character is less of a fleshed-out person than she is a symbol of innocence.
