Slapping an R rating on the sequel would limit its potential audience, which may result in a lower box office haul. Considering Meg 2: The Trench's estimated $185 million budget, an R rating isn't really an option.

If you just want a big, dumb movie about a giant shark terrorizing a group of ocean-bound scientists and Jason Statham, you could do a lot worse than The Meg. If a movie is filled with stereotypical characters, a generic plot, and a bunch of incongruencies, at least own it. This is where The Meg fails to deliver.

Meg 2 is unapologetically ridiculous with the action and plotlines. Some moments are quite predictable, with decisions by characters that will obviously go the wrong way, but in a movie about fighting sharks, those can be overlooked.

Scenes of moderate action violence include large explosions, undetailed shootings, heavy blows and use of improvised weapons. Giant sharks devour boats of people. Jiuming is attacked by an aquatic reptile and stabs it with the shovel in the side of the head twice. Blood is visible.
While The Meg's premise is simple, and you can totally watch the new sequel without seeing the first film, why would you rid yourself of the blissful occasion of watching Jason Statham beat up a giant shark not once, but twice?

This film has a lot more jumpscares than the first, that's the scariest part of it though. Jumpscares occur throughout and are loud and scary. In an extremely gruesome scene, the POV of people swallowed by a shark is shown. Its teeth are visible cutting through their bodies with blood leaking from them.
