Primrose Everdeen is killed near the end of Mockingjaywhile trying to help people. She acts as a medic during the rebellion, and when she sees a group of people in the Capitol wounded by bomb blasts, she rushes in with the other medics to help them.
Prim was among the medics who arrived to treat the victims. Unfortunately, a second batch of bombs were set off, with Prim being killed in the explosions. Gale was not the one to drop the bombs from the hovercraft, but he was one of the key figures to devise the strategy of double bombings.
Prim's death was necessary for Katniss to see the true evil of Coin. This also allowed Katniss to hate Coin on a higher level and have a motive to kill her. Finnick's death was also necessary because he protected Katniss and the others of the Star Squad during the lizard mutt attack.

Snow laughs after Katniss killed Coin because he enjoys the irony of the situation. He avoided the official execution ceremony, even though Panem's citizens still take their revenge on him, while Katniss ends up snatching away the victory and power that Coin thinks she has successfully secured.

Presently, those aspects of her life form her identity. She decides she doesn't ever want to have kids because even though she would be a victor, her children wouldn't be exempt from the reapings.
Katniss talks to them about survival, telling Prim that she shouldn't take out any tesserae, that the two of them should be able to survive off of Prim's goat's milk and cheese and her mother's apothecary medicines.
