However, knowing that he could not leave Lily's safety in the hands of someone who could turn back at his word on a mere whim and that Lily would probably defend her child to the last breath, Snape also approached Albus Dumbledore to ask him to save Lily.
Dumbledore was already dying, long before Voldemort conspired to try to have him killed, and simply wanted Snape to give him a more merciful end than he would have received at the hands of Death Eaters, as well as to avoid making Draco Malfoy into a murderer and damaging his soul.

Who was Snape truly loyal to?
I cannot deny, however, the fact that Severus was loyal to Dumbledore, to some extent. He responded very differently to Dumbledore than he did to others. He wasn't rude, sarcastic, nor bitingly cruel to Dumbledore as he seemed to be to many others.
Snape seems to shift his loyalty between Dumbledore and Voldemort throughout the Harry Potter movies. Only the last film reveals that Snape had always been on the good side. He swore to protect Harry and did Dumbledore's bidding in his war against Voldemort, including infiltrating the Death Eaters.

By Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it's a stretch to call Draco a villain anymore. We just watched — or read — him struggle to reconcile his choices and morals in The Half-Blood Prince. He can no longer justify his actions, and is far more aware of the evil he was born and raised into.
