M'Baku became a renegade and gains his powers by killing a white gorilla, bathing in its blood, and eating its flesh, taking the alias of Man-Ape. He fought with the Black Panther and was believed to be killed when the Panther Totem that he bound Black Panther to crumbled and buried him instead.
In the aftermath, Shuri planted the Heart-Shaped Herb and talked to M'Baku, saying she was leaving Wakanda. At the coronation, M'Baku stepped down from the Royal Talon Fighter, even though everyone believed it would be Shuri. He then announced that he challenged for the throne. He became the reigning king of Wakanda.

M'Baku was the leader of the isolated Wakandan tribe, the Jabari, which had retreated to the mountains of the country and renounced the use of Vibranium.
Hanuman provided for them, giving them a unique variety of tree of exceptionally strong wood, which the Jabari were able to use to build their own city. The Jabari continue to worship Hanuman, in contrast to the other Wakandan tribes, who revere Bashenga's benefactress, the panther goddess Bast.
Though Shuri may have given up her position as Wakanda's next leader, there was no indication that she surrendered her status as the new Black Panther. If anything, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever demonstrated Shuri's determination to protect her people and maybe even the rest of the world.
There's also his club, which previously came in handy when he was engaging in ritual combat atop a waterfall. M'Baku's furry armor is another key feature of his character design, but both that and his club only get him so far in battle against Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) in "Wakanda Forever."
While Wakanda Forever doesn't officially confirm that M'Baku took the throne, he is likely the new king as Shuri was in Haiti at the time visiting Nakia. She probably doesn't want to rule the country due to her other duties as Wakanda's greatest hero.

Though Shuri took the mantle of Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's ending explained that it would be M'Baku's turn to sit on the throne. M'Baku first appeared in Black Panther as a challenger to T'Challa taking the throne. However, this time, M'Baku doesn't need to challenge anyone.
In the end, Shuri's interaction with Killmonger acts as more than just a highly-anticipated cameo. Finding Killmonger on the throne and hearing his violent point of view gives her the chance to confront her own emotions, no matter how dark they are.

Well, if you remember, Wakanda Forever ends with M'Baku challenging the throne. While Wakanda Foever stops short of naming M'Baku king, Duke doesn't. In the Wakanda Forever movie, when Shuri appeared as the black panther in Jabari land, it seemed as if her and M' Baku arm wrestled to determine her strength. He is the approximate strength of a man of his size and heavy exercise.
