One of the best parts about their friendship is that they were opposites. Marlin was passive-aggressive and pessimistic, while Dory was optimistic. Dory had every reason to be as down-in-the-dumps but she only focused on the good. While the two were on their way to Sydney, they ended up getting lost and needing help.
The two bring out the best in each other, challenge each other, and help each other grow. Through the adventure, Dory helps Marlin learns how to trust and let go. While, for Dory, she admits, “I remember things better with you. I look at you, and I… and I'm home,” to Marlin.
Destiny is Dory's childhood friend. The two are shown speaking to each other through tiny pipes as children. When Dory meets Destiny again, Destiny is overjoyed to finally meet her "pipe pal". The two maintain a good friendship, as Dory compliments her swimming.
She is able to put Marlin first despite his insensitivity to her feelings because she genuinely cares about helping, just as a hero would. Dory's positive outlook on life and trust in those around her is the only thing that got the two of them through the journey to find Nemo.
The story begins just where “Finding Nemo” ended: Marlin, Nemo, and Dory have returned to routine life as close friends. When Dory suddenly remembers she lost her parents as a child, the three fish begin (another) ocean-wide journey toward a reunion.
Marlin finally gets annoyed with Dory and asks her to leave. He has the info he needs and doesn't want to get delayed anymore. Dory's pretty sad. A school of moonfish comes up when they see her crying.
He was especially paranoid and neurotic about any potential danger that could occur to Nemo, and as such, rarely left Nemo alone due to the traumatic experience of losing the rest of his family to a barracuda attack, and not wanting the same thing to happen to Nemo.
On coral reefs, “Dory,” the small vibrant blue fish with black stripes and a yellow tail, is known by several other names: Hippo Tang, Royal Blue Tang, Regal Tang, Palette Surgeonfish and by the scientific name Paracanthurus hepatus.
When life gets you down do you know what you've gotta do? Marlin : No, I don't know what to do. Dory : [singing] Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.
Dory suffers from severe short-term memory loss, but a lot of what she goes through can be adapted to other contexts, such as the world, or ocean, of ADHD. Dory has trouble with multi-step directions, is easily distracted, and is very impulsive.
In a flashback Dory hears her mother crying in fears of being relocated to another aquarium, so she left to retrieve a shell to cheer her up, to which she was pulled away by an undertow current out into the ocean.
Dory is the third female protagonist in a Pixar film, the first two being Merida and Joy. She is also Pixar's third titular character, the first two being Nemo and WALL-E, and the second titular character to be a protagonist overall, the first one being WALL-E. She is also Pixar's first female titular character.
Nemo is a young clownfish who's the only son of Marlin. Nemo and Marlin were the sole survivors after a barracuda attack that caused Marlin's partner, Coral, and their other 400 fish eggs to perish.
Trivia. Marlin is named after an actual fish, called a marlin. In Monsters Inc., a painting of Marlin can be seen in the sushi restaurant where Mike and Celia go on their date.
It's quite obvious that Dory has anterograde amnesia, which is the inability to form new memories. I also see many of the signs of ADHD within the character.
Marlin was initially a very playful, happy and easygoing clownfish, as seen through the interaction with his wife, Coral. He was shown to be slightly lazy, as he wanted to name half of his children Marlin Jr. and the other half of his children Coral Jr.
Researcher believe Marlin suffers from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) (pg. OCD is a mental disorder in which people have anxiety when certain things in their daily lives are not done to them.
Marlin proves to be emotionally disabled from the traumatic loss of his wife, and eggs. “Like many single parents who have survived a tragedy, Marlin turns neurotically overprotective of his son (Germain, 2003)”. Marlin helps represent the struggle with chronic anxiety, and the effect it has on relationships.
The common name dory (from the Middle English dorre, from the Middle French doree, lit. "gilded one") is shared (officially and colloquially) by members of several different families of large-eyed, silvery, deep-bodied, laterally compressed, and roughly discoid marine fish.
Along her side, Dory has a scar that she got from a jellyfish sting. Like most characters in the movie, Dory has very large eyes for a fish her size and an exaggerated mouth that serves for showing her facial expressions.
