Near the beginning of Frozen, Elsa and Anna's parents, Queen Iduna and King Agnarr, leave on a voyage for an unspecified reason, saying that they'll be back in two weeks. Frozen explicitly shows the audience that Iduna and Agnarr's ship has sunk, killing both of the young princesses' parents.
But Anna and Elsa's parents are coming back in the sequel — for a scene. The movie will begin with a prologue set in the past. The flashback will feature the princesses' mother, voiced by Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood. In a scene shown at D23, the mother sings to her two young daughters to help them fall asleep.
Ten years later, Agnarr and Iduna set off on a two-week sea voyage. During a storm, they are drowned at sea by monstrous waves. Anna and all the people of Arendelle mourn their deaths (a portrait of the royal couple is draped over with a black sheet of fabric), but Elsa does not attend the funeral.
As she grew, her mother would sing to her a lullaby about the all-knowing river Ahtohallan. When she was five years old, Iduna's tribe, including her parents, were killed by invaders, leaving her the sole survivor of the massacre.

Why was Iduna calling Elsa?
The call led her to Ahtohallan, where Elsa was able to discover her true calling and the truth about the curse placed on the Enchanted Forest. Elsa discovered that the call was used by Iduna to summon the Wind Spirit to save Agnarr.
Evan Rachel Wood voices Iduna (Elsa and Anna's mother), and Delaney Rose Stein voices the young Iduna. Alfred Molina voices Agnarr (Elsa and Anna's father), and Jackson Stein voices young Agnarr.
