It's truly genre bending. The inky water bleeds through these man-made, overdone borders. It's part horror/jump scares, thriller, drama, mystery, and fable.
While it's made competently enough, it's so tepid and mundane that you almost zone out many times. There are hardly any real scares or thrills, and the movie struggles to maintain any kind of tension, despite the cast trying their best to keep some interest alive.
Even those who might usually jolt during a jump scare need not worry; the film's most disconcerting scenes are subdued compared to other, scarier horror films.
Night Swim is officially rated PG-13. That's the same as M3GAN, Five Nights at Freddy's, and a few other lighter horror movies of recent years. It's going to be one of those that you can take your kids to see. Well, the older ones, at least.
Until national standards are developed, as a parent I'd set 12 as the minimum age (though I'm feeling better with 15), but I'd also look closely at all the other variables. Is your child a truly competent swimmer? (ask their swim teacher, don't rely on your judgement or your child's) Who else will be in the pool?

Swimming at night burns off your left-over energy and releases feel-good endorphins that reduce stress, and provide a calming effect that helps you fall asleep and stay asleep.
There are only two bloody moments in the mix. In one case, Ray is cleaning the empty pool drain when his hand is slashed open by something sharp. And in the other instance, Izzy slips and falls on broken glass. She sits up and pulls a large shard of it out of her palm.
It's not just that the mystery is dumb and the ending is bad, it's also that very little happens over the course of the film. The original short film, which is also fairly uneventful, is not much longer than three minutes. Night Swim has maybe three worthwhile minutes in the entire 98-minute film.
