Though some characters differ, the central plot of The One Hundred and One Dalmatians is the same as its film adaptations: after the Dearlys' dogs have puppies, Cruella makes several requests to buy them, but the family will not allow it. So she takes matters into her own hands and hires thieves to steal the puppies.

In the mid-credits scene, we see Roger (Kayvan Novak) receiving a gift from Cruella – a dalmatian puppy which she introduces to him as Pongo. Then we see Anita (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) receive a matching puppy, Perdita.
The third act of the movie is dedicated to a nonstop chase as Pongo and Perdita attempt to get all 99 puppies to safety. Finally, they make it back to Roger and Anita, who decide to open a “dalmatian plantation” to accommodate all their new dog friends. And they all live happily ever after.

While at Hell Hall, the ancestral home of the De Vil family, Sergeant Tibbs finds the 15 puppies and 84 other Dalmatian puppies whom Cruella bought from pet shops through legitimate means. It later turns out that Cruella wants to kill them all to use their fur for a spotted fur coat.
At the climax of the film, the Baroness tries to use the dalmatians to knock Cruella off a cliff like the Baroness did to Cruella's mother, but Cruella has tamed the dogs and they now obey her. After the Baroness goes to jail, Cruella ends up adopting the Baroness' dalmatians.
It is there the movie arbitrarily suggests Cruella de Vil's eventual obsession with Dalmatians is because that breed of dog was used as a literal murder weapon in the death of her mother.

April Mackin trained several of the canines that played the Wink role and found that each dog actor had their own personality.
At the 2022 Oscars, makeup artist Nadia Stacey revealed that the script for the sequel was in the works. Even in 2023, the project is still in its pre-production stage. Considering the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Cruella probably won't begin filming before 2024.
