Gale lives with his mother Hazelle and his three younger siblings (Rory, Vick, and Posy). After his father's death in the same mining accident that killed Katniss' father. Being from the Seam, Gale shares a slight resemblance to Katniss.
When Gale was whipped and taken to the Everdeen house, Hazelle went to stay with him. It is known that Hazelle and the rest of her children escaped the District 12 bombing. They are seen in District 13.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.
Though her family is now very wealthy and has plenty of food to eat due to her having won the Hunger Games, Katniss still illegally hunts every day in the woods outside of District 12 because she needs to provide food for Gale's family.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
When her husband dies in a mining accident, however, she falls into a daze, unable to work and take care of her children. As a result, Katniss is forced to grow up quickly to support the family and can never bring herself to fully trust her mother again.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
In other words, Gale is two years' Katniss' senior. Before they decided to hunt together in the woods to provide for their families, Katniss only knew of Gale as an upperclassman. She had glimpsed him from time to time while at school.
Gale had been manipulated and used by Coin's military just like Katniss had, but he didn't mind. He believed that these evils needed to be done for the greater good, and though he regretted Prim's death, the strategy had freed Panem.

After Prim's death, Gale leaves voluntarily because neither of them can avoid the matter of Prim's death having been caused by Gale's invention, with Katniss letting him go without a word. Katniss subsequently grows back together with Peeta, whom she finds she loves again now that he is recovered from his hijacking.
Essentially, Katniss was afraid that if she was to kill President Snow, then the whole revolution fails, and the rivalry would still continue. Therefore, Katniss had to sacrifice by killing Coin in order to end war, and knew that Coin couldn't do anything better than Snow to save the Panem.
Katniss blamed Gale for the death of Prim. She would never be able to look at him again without thinking of his part in her death. Gale was the best friend he could have been to her at that moment. He knew her so perfectly to understand this, he knew his chance with her had passed.
Peeta's Family Was Killed When President Snow Bombed District 12. After Katniss and Peeta won the Hunger Games, they each received a house in Victor's Village. Katniss' mother and Prim immediately moved from their home in the Seam, but Peeta's family stayed at the bakery—so District 12's boy tribute lived alone.
During the supposed execution of Snow, she instead shoots Coin, due to her being responsible for Prim's death. She then attempts to kill herself with the suicide pill attached to her uniform, but Peeta stops her.
Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
The role was not offered to any other actress before Lawrence. Gary Ross explained to Entertainment Weekly, "I absolutely cast the right person for the role and in my view there wasn't even a question who the best Katniss was. It was the easiest casting decision I ever made in my life."
Katniss was then arrested and spent time in a mental facility. By the time she was allowed to return to District 12 at the end of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Katniss was 18 years old.
The double bomb that kills Katniss Everdeen's sister, Primrose, was designed by two rebels: Beetee and Gale, Katniss's lifelong friend. Previously, Gale had explained that the double bombs are designed to appeal to mankind's weakness for compassion.
She was only 13 years old when she was killed in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and her youth only makes the tragedy that much harder for Katniss to bear after everything else she had suffered. Prim's death is a truly heartbreaking moment.
Katniss has a conflicted relationship with her mother. Following her father's death, her mother fell into deep depression and now rarely speaks. As a result, Katniss has a difficult time feeling love and affection for her mother, even as she recognizes that her mother is a kind and intelligent woman.
In the case of Johanna, they each hated each other because that was what the Capitol had taught them to do. They were from competing Districts, and the idea of the Games was to keep the lesser citizens of Panem distrustful of one another and unwilling to form alliances (or raise arms in war).
