Did Gandalf ever face Sauron directly? If so, what happened? A thousand years before the events of the War of the Ring, yet a thousand years after his arrival in Middle-earth, Gandalf once entered Dol Guldur, alone, and indirectly challenged the Necromancer.
Yes, but not on Arda. The closest they came to meeting on Arda was in Mirkwood, at the fortress of Dol Guldur. Twice Gandalf came calling, once to determine the identity of The Necromancer, and once, after he confirmed it was Sauron, with backup (The White Council) to attack. Both times Sauron fled.
The Council of Elrond creates the Fellowship of the Ring, with Gandalf as its leader, to defeat Sauron by destroying the Ring. He takes them south through the Misty Mountains, but is killed fighting a Balrog, an evil spirit-being, in the underground realm of Moria.

It was as if the Ring had granted him a vision of what could happen if the great Elf were to wield its power. Jackson, on the other hand, used Galadriel's dark form as a visual cue for the audience. Specifically, it represented how she would become evil if she gave in to her deepest desire.
For those that haven't read Tolkien's work, it's easy to see why many audiences suspect Gandalf and Galadriel are in love. After all, many of their interactions in The Hobbit trilogy practically scream romance. However, their relationship remains purely platonic in Tolkien's source material.
Saving Galadriel at sea was likely a method of gaining her trust, since Sauron would need an Elf's friendship to enter their realm. Whether he targeted Galadriel specifically because he could exploit her bloody-minded rage and broken heart is unclear.
