He thanks his father as he thinks that his death would cause him to fall even further into darkness, ending his conflict. However, Han fondly touches his face, showing love towards his son as he fells off the bridge, and in this moment Kylo immediately feels regret for killing him.
It was revealed in an earlier comic, specifically Age of Resistance - Supreme Leader Snoke #1, that Kylo originally refused to kill Han Solo before the events of The Force Awakens. As such, much of the sequel trilogy's first film centered on Snoke getting Kylo to rectify this mistake.

However, Han's death is — or should be — a devastating thing for Chewie in a way that is never explained, nor is the full emotional effect expressed in the movies. Han dies. Chewie fails not only his friend, but also his deep-rooted belief in the life debt he was meant to fulfill.

When Han returned for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, thirty years had passed. In 34 ABY, the figure would have been 66 years old based on his birthdate. Sadly, Han wouldn't go on to reach his seventies, since his own son, Kylo Ren, kills him during the first installment of the sequel trilogy.
