As I've said many times, I believe his mistreatment of Loki (at least pre-TR) stems from ignorance and centuries of habit. Those are things that can be worked on and overcome with enough effort. Odin's abuse of both Loki and Thor, by contrast, is born of, at best, narcissism and at worst, malice.
Odin openly told him he only would spare his life because of Frigga's love for him, and he condemned Loki to an eternal imprisonment inside the Asgardian Dungeons.
Most Marvel fans think that Odin favors Thor over Loki because the former is his natural son, while Loki is the adopted son of the giant Laufey. However, there is another, much deeper reason for Odin's favoritism, and it hides in the one-eyed god's past and his relationship with his brother Cul, the God of Fear.

Why didn t Loki turn blue when Odin died?
However, Odin must have used stronger magic than a simple illusion. Otherwise, Loki would have turned blue in Loki when he entered the Time Variance Authority (TVA) Office, where magic and powers did not work. This means that Odin must have used a formal spell on Loki, which did not require constant magical upkeep.

So while Zeus' best feat is defeating a mountain-sized monster, Odin's best feat is defeating a monster as big as nine worlds. Odin outclasses Zeus in intelligence, versatility, strength, and weapons. Zeus simply can't compete. The winner is Odin, All-Father of the Æsir.
Odin stands a good chance at defeating a moderately-fed Galactus. Odin has been stated to be equal to a moderately-fed Galactus. Though Galan did withstand a powerful headbutt from Odin. The Devourer had just consumed one planet before that.
Loki finally put his trust in his father's love. He finally roots himself in that love, claiming his sonship as his identity. The strength of Odin's love allowed Loki to make his own act of unshakeable love, remaining true to his brother even though it cost him his life.

Here, holding on to all of the timelines, he became a kind of tree god, physically representing the Norse tree of life, Yggdrasil. It was a poignant and painful ending for Loki, who now seems to be sentenced to being alone for eternity as he watches over the timelines.
In Avengers: Infinity War, even after his own passing, Dr. Strange's enchantment protected the Eye of Agamotto, which contained the Time Stone. Similarly, even after Odin's death, Loki was still under the influence of his father's magic, which prevented any return to his original appearance.
