Quasimodo falls in love with Esmeralda for her kindness. Later, Esmeralda is arrested for the murder of the soldier Phoebus (which she did not commit) and sentenced for murder via supposed witchcraft. In fact, Phoebus is alive after an attempted murder by Frollo, who witnessed Phoebus attempting to seduce Esmeralda.
When Quasimodo is sentenced to the pillory for his attempted kidnapping, it is Esmeralda, his victim, who pities him and serves him water. Because of this, he falls deeply in love with her, even though she is too disgusted by his perceived ugliness even to let him kiss her hand.
Esmeralda's looks earn her a ton of unwanted attention. Mostly, this comes from Frollo, who is so taken by her beauty that he attributes it to the devil and sets out to either possess her or destroy her. But Esmeralda's appearance also earns her the animosity of the jealous Fleur-de-Lis and her friends.
A major reason why the plot and characters weren't as good this time around is because the short is far too short at a meagre 63 minutes. On the other hand, the main positive was a surprisingly good performance from Jennifer Love-Hewitt, as Quasimodo's love interest, Madelleine, I just loved her personality.
In Disney's 2002 direct-to-video sequel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, Phoebus (again voiced by Kline) is married to Esmeralda and they have a young son, Zephyr, who resembles him.

Who was Quasimodo in love with?
Quasimodo sneaks out of the cathedral during the Festival of Fools, where he is crowned the "King of Fools". While there, he meets Esmeralda, with whom he falls in love.
In reality, Phoebus is her love, and the reason she chose Pheobus over Quasimodo was not that Quasimodo was deformed, but because Quasimodo had not fully matured, and his blind adulation for her may have led to him becoming overly reliant on her.

What is the controversy with the Disney hunchback?
Despite overall being a success upon release, the film was controversial for many different reasons. Parents felt that the film's mature themes were too dark for children to see.
