The mystery actually adhered fairly closely to The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien's writings: In the mythology of Middle-earth, Sauron comes to the elves disguised as a “fair” man in order to trick them into forging the first three rings of power and learn their secrets in the process.
What Is Sauron's Plan? Sauron lied about being king of the Southlands in order to gain the trust of the elves and influence them into making the rings.
Although Celebrimbor forged the Three Rings alone in Eregion, they were moulded by Sauron's craft and were bound to the One. Only after Sauron's defeat, when the One Ring was cut from his finger at the end of the Second Age, did the Elves begin to actively use the Three to ward off the decay brought by time.
Sauron, then known as "Lord of the Gifts" claimed he wished to make Middle-earth as fair as Valinor, and it seemed he convinced the Elves to think these rings could do so. As time passed, Sauron's and Celebrimbor's experimentations with the rings led to the forging of rings with far greater power and abilities.
In Tolkien's world, physical magical objects concentrate power. Sauron wanted to dominate the magic rings he had made with the Elves earlier, and also other rings the elves had made. If he could corrupt every ring-bearer with a Great Ring, he could enslave all of his enemies at once.

Why couldn t Sauron control the Elven rings?
The Elves turned out to be immune to his direct control, and he could only read their minds for as long as they wore their rings, but then they could read his one, and once they discovered his plot they took them off never to use them again while he was in business.
Sauron, in disguise, deceived Celebrimbor and the smiths of Eregion into making Rings of Power, and then secretly made the One Ring to gain control over all the others, and so dominate Middle-earth.
Realising he could not defeat the Númenóreans with military strength, Sauron allowed himself to be taken as a hostage to Númenor by King Ar-Pharazôn in S.A. 3262. There, he quickly grew from captive to adviser and was known as Zigûr, the Wizard; he seduced the King and further corrupted the people.
Sauron seemed to genuinely feel a connection to her, and part of that came from sensing the darkness inside of Galadriel. In that regard, his offer was really a seduction to the dark side.
His offer to let Galadriel rule alongside him as Queen of Middle-earth appears to be an earnest offer that the Dark Lord desperately wants her to accept. Sauron doesn't need an Elf to help him achieve dominance in Middle-earth, so one can only assume he's truly in love with Galadriel.
The dwarves of Middle-Earth were notoriously strong willed, able to resist corruption and stay true to their purpose. Sauron had no means by which to corrupt them regardless of how he tried.
Sauron was the most powerful of the Maiar—primordial spirits created to help the Valar first shape the World. His original name was Mairon, which means "the Admirable," and as an immortal spirit born before the world's creation, he was able to perceive the Creator Eru Ilúvatar directly.
In order to make such a weapon, the crafter themself would need to be just as corrupt and be able to provide some of their life force to keep it powered. So unless an equally evil being held the same ring-making knowledge as Sauron, it was impossible to make another.
Celebrimbor is slain personally by Sauron, but Sauron does not get the Three Rings. His wrath now blazes. Elrond with all (the few) refugees from Eregion he can gather fight a vanguard action and draw away N.W. He founds a stronghold in Imladris.
Celebrimbor's been evil since he tried to take power from Sauron. Talion's just catching up with his new buddy. (There's a thing in LotR where trying to become extremely powerful=evil, especially if you're using evil tools to do so. That's what Saruman's entire plot chain is about.
She said all this to Celebrimbor, who decided to make her the Elessar so she could have everything she had wished. When he gave it to her, he told her it was because of his love for her, even though she had chosen Celeborn to marry.
Finally Sauron came out to fight Elendil and Gil-galad face to face. When Elendil fell, his sword Narsil broke beneath him. Isildur took up the hilt-shard of Narsil and cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand, vanquishing Sauron.
In his notes, Tolkien remarks that Sauron saw Galadriel as his equal. Add that to the fact that she's untrusting of Sauron (yes, even when he's in his Annatar guise) and an unwavering, single-minded force, and it's more likely than not that Sauron feared Galadriel — or the potential she held to upend his plans.
Sauron did desire Galadriel... He desired to make her his puppet-Queen. He didn't have any romantic feeling for her. He didn't want to marry her or have romance with her.
Additionally, while he was in his weakened state, Galadriel could hold him off through the power of will alone. However, if Sauron had his One Ring and faced off in a battle against Galadriel, it's unlikely that there would be much she could do.
Halbrand does not deny his heroism out of bashful humility, though; he knows that as Sauron, he's not the hero she wants him to be for the Southlands -- not when his plans involve scorching it into Mordor. No, Halbrand was never a hero, nor did he ever claim to be.
