The Dementors supposedly led the Death Eaters and Voldemort into the Ministry of Magic. After the end of the Second Wizarding War in 1998, the Ministry was reformed, and Minister for Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt ensured that they were not used by the government again.
For non-HP fans, a dementor was a magical creature- evil to be precise who sucked a person's soul. They were the foulest creatures of the wizarding world. Now, a dementor may not exist in the real world, but they're people who are real-world dementors.
Due to their actions during the war (allowing Death Eaters to escape back to Voldemort and joining forces with him themselves), Shacklebolt disbanded the Dementors as guards of the wizard prison. It is unknown where they went or what they did without their only known application.
Although they were used as guards for the prison, Azkaban, Dementors were not known to permanently inhabit any other location. The only way to protect against Dementors was with the Patronus Charm and consuming chocolate would also alleviate some of the side effects of their close presence.

Dementors nearly kissed Mary Cattermole during one trial, but Harry Potter repelled them, and he and Hermione Granger freed her and the other Muggle-borns being held prisoner, helping them to escape, along with Ron Weasley. It is possible that some innocent Muggle-borns were kissed before the Ministry was taken back.
Dementors are born when there is so much pain and suffer in the air that it can materialise it's self. That means that most Dementors were created during the First and Second wizarding war or in the time of Grinwald's attacks in Europe. That's why Dementors can only be destroyed by the Patronum summoning charm.
They're also considered amortal instead of immortal. They don't live forever, but cannot be killed by typical means. The number of Dementors dwindle when there is more happiness in their environment. While they might not really die, they do disappear.
Interestingly despite being considered natural allies to Dark wizards, the Dementors did not side with the Death Eaters in the First Wizarding War nor did Voldemort appear to try and recruit them.
Well, that's because originally, Azkaban was a fortress built by the sorcerer Ekrizdis, who himself was a powerful and insane practitioner of the Dark Arts. Ekrizdis actually lured, tortured, and killed Muggle sailors there up until he died and the concealment charms faded.
Azkaban was a fortress on an island in the middle of the North Sea. It served the magical community of Great Britain as a prison for convicted criminals. Azkaban was built in the 15th century and it had been in use as a detention facility since 1718.
Azkaban was inspired by the real inescapable Alcatraz Prison and is named, in part, for the Hebrew word âAbaddonâ meaning: âPlace of destructionâ or âDepths of hellâ.
Dementors have a humanoid shape, approximately three metres, or 10 feet high, and are covered in dark hooded cloaks of long, ripped black cloth, making them resemble closely to wraiths. Its body is greyed and decayed looking, and its breath sounds rattling, like it is trying to "suck more than air" out of a room.
Reproduction. Dementors breed by surrounding themselves with large amounts of a special fog which they exude. New individuals, already fully formed, will gradually congregate from the mist. Dementors usually breed in large groups.
However, it was described that their faces were no different in appearance. According to the books, Dementor's faces featured a hole where their mouth should be and a gaunt look that resembled a corpse, complete with black holes for eyes. Even scarier, their skin appeared burned and scabbed up.
The Dementor's Kiss was generally considered to be a punishment worse than death. Victims were left in what Muggles would call a 'Persistent Vegetative State': empty shells that were still alive but irretrievably 'gone'.

Behind the scenes. It is possible that chocolate is used to ward off the effects following meeting a Dementor as it has chemicals inside it that stimulate the release of endorphins, which are chemicals produced by the body to combat stress and pain; often leading to feeling of increased happiness.
Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them... Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you.
Draco Malfoy is the pure-blooded son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy. He was a notorious bully to Harry Potter and his friends throughout the series. Draco becomes a Death Eater in his sixth year at Hogwarts and is assigned to kill Dumbledore. However, he fails and Dumbledore is ultimately killed by Snape.
