Peeta thanks Katniss for finding him and she says that he would have done the same. He talks about what Katniss should do if he doesn't make it back. She's worried that he might die, and to keep him from speaking of such things, she kisses him. It's her first kiss.
The events of the Hunger Games movies span over a period of several years, beginning when Katniss is 16 and ending when she is 18. The exact age of Katniss Everdeen when she dies is not specified, but she lives at least until she is 33 years old and has a happy ending.
By making up the lie about him and Katniss already being married and Katniss being pregnant in the tributes' interview with Caesar Flickerman, Peeta effectively convinces the audience that the Games are unjust without explicitly speaking out against the Capitol.
