For most of the movie, Dory is not able to find her parents, and despite her best attempts, she has moments where it's clear she's losing hope that they'll ever get to be a family again. Yet by the end of the movie, Dory and her folks manage to reunite, and it's just as heartwarming a moment as you'd hope.
With the help of her new friends and self-confidence, she saves Nemo, Hank, Marlin and the rest of the animals bound for Cleveland. The film ends with Dory living happily back at the reef with Nemo, Marlin, Hank and her parents.
Then the actual flashback begins as she is in their coral home, crying to Charlie about how she's scared about what will happen to their daughter as she can't remember anything, and expresses her worries about when she'll be by herself as an adult. Charlie comforts her, both not knowing Dory has seen everything.
The companionship that emerges is completely genuine. Nonetheless, Dory and Marlin's relationship is a complicated and interesting one. Some view Dory as Marlin's companion and speculate that the two are actually lovers.
Nemo. Dory has a motherly relationship with Nemo. When the two met, she was relieved to find someone with kindness, and offered to help him look for his father, although she didn't remember she was looking for him too.

Dory subsequently has flashbacks of life with her parents and struggles to recall details. Dory was initially supposed to be a male character during the pre-production of the film. Andrew Stanton admits to struggling with a writing block upon the character. That was until he overheard his wife watching an episode of the sitcom Ellen.
Ultimately, after a series of comedic and heartwarming events, they do find the Marine Life Institute in Morro Bay, California. At the Institute, Dory is eventually reunited with her parents, and Marlin and Nemo's journey to find her family comes to a successful and heartwarming conclusion.

I headcanon her as having an exaggerated version of ADHD because she gets distracted extremely easily and can't keep her attention on one thing.
Dory's scars from her travel through the jellyfish in Finding Nemo (2003) have disappeared. They may well have healed in the time between the two films.
