The Death of Johnny Cade: Analysis. Johnny survives the fire but also has severe burns across his body and a broken back. After the rest of the Greasers have one final rumble with the Socs, they return to the hospital just before Johnny succumbs to his injuries. Before dying, he tells Ponyboy to "stay gold."
Answer and Explanation: In The Outsiders, Johnny dies as a result of burns and a spinal injury sustained while rescuing children from the burning church. When the boys return from eating, the church is on fire, and Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy rush in to save the children inside.
Pony is in denial about Johnny's death, and keeps repeating that he isn't dead. He leaves the hospital and roams the streets until a stranger picks him up and drives him home. Upon arriving home, Pony tells the rest of the gang about Johnny's death and everyone is silent.
Ponyboy tells a tragic tale—a tale of violence, of poverty, and of young men dying in the streets. But, luckily, The Outsiders manages to end on a happy note, with most of Ponyboy's major problems resolved. He isn't sent to a boys' home, or brought up on charges.

Fingerprints and DNA at the crime scene as well as witness accounts all clearly indicate local sports coach Terrence Maitland as the killer, so detective Ralph Anderson orders a public arrest.
In Chapter 12 of The Outsiders, the reader sees the court hearing unfold. During court, all the Socs (the wealthy teenagers) tell the judge that Johnny killed Bob. After court, Ponyboy is cleared of all charges and allowed to go home with his brothers, Darry and Soda.
Ponyboy asks Sodapop about Sandy and learns that she got pregnant and moved to Florida. Her parents refused to let her marry Sodapop because of his age, so Sandy left to live with her grandmother.
Although, this incident can't even compare to what happened years later in terms of devastation. According to IMDb, Lowe had asked Hinton during filming what became of Soda after The Outsiders. The author responded Lowe's character was drafted into the Vietnam War and died there.
The policemen kill Dally. After Johnny dies in the hospital, Dally is so upset, he runs away from Ponyboy and robs a grocery store. The police chase him to the empty lot where the greasers hang out. There, Dally takes out his unloaded gun and threatens the police, who shoot him in self-defense.

After Johnny's death, Dally doesn't know how to live anymore. He cared for Johnny more than the rest of his family with the Greasers. Unable to cope, Dally robs a store and aims an unloaded gun at the police, and forces them to kill him.

Loyalty: The greasers have strong bonds of loyalty. Two-Bit spends the day with Ponyboy so he won't be left alone.
Sodapop is an attractive, compassionate, and enduringly happy character. He and his brothers are greasers, exemplified by their long, oiled hair, low economic status in the inner-city, and a general association with 'hoodlums' or gangs.
After finding out that Sodapop is upset because his letters to Sandy went unanswered, Ponyboy realizes that he “never had paid much attention to Soda's problems.” At the end of the novel, Sodapop is the character who finally unites the Curtis family, after he breaks down in tears over his brothers' constant fighting.

Pony has a pretty good impression of her, unlike his impressions of most of the Greaser girls he knows. When Pony learns that Sandy's pregnant—not with Soda's kid—and that Sandy's parents refused to let her marry Soda, he realizes Soda has problems too.
He wanted to marry her anyway, but she just left". Soda still loved Sandy even when it was evident that she had cheated on him, but Sandy didn't feel the same way about him. Soda wanted to marry her, but she just disappeared, and his letters to her were "returned unopened" (Chapter 12).
Ponyboy doesn't stay gold. His grades suffer, he loses memory and appetite, and he continues fighting with Darry, he is also depressed. This took place in the 60s where ponyboy lives in a town with the town being seperated into 2 dominant groups (socs, greasers).
Sodapop, Ponyboy's favorite person in the whole world, is frequently described as incredibly handsome throughout the novel. Ponyboy does not see himself this way, however.
