Referred to as “IT”, this creature takes the form of its victims' biggest fears as it feeds off their fear, but its preferred shape is that of Pennywise.
So in this case, Pennywise is an entity that feeds on fear and fear actually gives him power, but he needs a constant supply of it, otherwise his physical form weakens and can eventually be destroyed.
Note: Despite popular belief. Just because the victim doesn't possess a fear or lack a fear, doesn't make Pennywise powerless. Such as when Richie shown no fear and began to trash talk him, he was still capable of using The Deadlights and his powers.

It certainly does not have a very high pain tolerance for a frightening demon. Each time that Pennywise is harmed during his encounters with the Losers Club, it does not respond with anger and rage. Pennywise retreats once it has been hurt, removing itself from the fight.
This creature feeds off fear and its preferred victims are children as their fears are simpler, but there might be another very different reason for that, and it's rooted on the real meaning of IT.

Art the Clown is not immortal in the sense that he can't die. While he is hard to kill, Art has been effectively killed in both Terrifier movies. However, it seems the creepily silent Art the Clown has an ability similar to The Umbrella Academy's Klaus, where he is able to resurrect himself by unknown means.
