William Thomas "Will" Riker was a 24th century Human man. Riker was best known for service in Starfleet, as a captain in command of the Federation starship USS Titan from the year 2378 to 2385.
Despite the accolades he's received, Riker has been slow to climb the ranks. He has turned down more than one offer of a captaincy, choosing instead to remain as the first officer on the USS Enterprise-D. With a ship like the Enterprise and a Captain like Jean-Luc Picard, it's no surprise he stayed as long as he did.
The story reasons for Riker's demotion are a bit thin, with Riker simply proclaiming his career prospects are nobody's business but his own. The real world reason is simple - the Enterprise was only going to have one captain, and the producers were in no way interested in losing the popular character of Riker.

Thad also has a younger sister, Kestra (Lulu Wilson). Thad became ill with a rare disease, prompting the Riker family to effectively retire from active Starfleet duty and relocate to the restorative planet Nepenthe. Despite their efforts, Thad succumbed to his illness as a teenager.
