Shadow initially fails to appear, but eventually he limps into view and happily comes running home at the sight of Peter. Chance narrates how it was Shadow's belief that brought them home and how the years seemed to lift off of him, making him a puppy again as he reunited with his boy.
However, his love for his boy is able to overcome Shadow's initial thoughts of surrender, and he is able to climb out and limp the rest of the way home to reunite with Peter only moments after Peter had thought Shadow couldn't make it after witnessing Chance and Sassy reunite with Jamie and Hope.
When I was growing up I watched this movie incessantly, it made me laugh, cry, and likely shaped who I am as a person. It's because of all the struggles in the movie that makes the happy ending THAT much more satisfying. Yes, it may be a feel-good, wholesome movie, but for me it's so much more than that.
Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (film) The Seaver family has decided to take Chance, an American bulldog; Sassy, a Himalayan cat; and Shadow, a golden retriever, with them on a trip to the Canadian Rockies.
Does the dog die? NO ANIMALS DIE. The cat is presumed dead for a while, but is ultimately okay, Chance the dog is struck by a porcupine, and is very unhappy with the quills in his face, and they are dutifully, but callously pulled out.
Near dusk, Chance and Sassy finally make it home and are happily reunited with their owners. Shadow initially fails to appear, but eventually he limps into view and happily comes running home at the sight of Peter.
How did they get shadow to limp in Homeward Bound?
When Shadow does appear at the end of the film to be reunited with Peter, Shadow runs with a limp. This was accomplished by putting part of a round wooden bead between the dog's toes. The bead did not hurt him in any way, but gave him a peculiar sensation, causing him to walk with a limp.
Ben, Rattler, and Tiki, the main animals portraying Shadow, Chance, and Sassy, receive star billing in the film, but, in reality, Chance and Shadow were each played by four dogs, while Sassy was played by 10 cats.
The trio reunites with their human family scene in Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco. The final heart-melting scene sees the trio cross the Golden Gate Bridge and reunite with their humans. Chance is saddened to have left Delilah behind but the pooch turns up at their family picnic.

For example, the popular film “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey” is actually based on a true story. Other accounts involve similarly unfathomable distances and obstacles that most humans would not be able to overcome. This includes: Bucky the Labrador who travelled 500 miles after he was relocated.
The animals follow their instincts and head west, towards home, 300 miles away through the Canadian wilderness. They face many obstacles in their path; from rivers to irritable people, but nonetheless, they struggle bravely on, until they finally reach home.
The porcupine scene was shot in cuts with a real porcupine and a fake dog. They allowed the porcupine to hit the fake dog to show contact. Then rubber porcupine needles were attached to the side of Chance's face with spirit gum, which is a substance that actors use to apply beards and mustaches to their faces.
Shadow is a wise, old golden retriever, who is very loyal and obedient to his owner Peter, a teenage boy who loves him very dearly. Given his age, he sees the way of a dog as his own law.
The only thing he has left to do to learn from Shadow is how to say goodbye, but Chance still refuses to leave Shadow behind. In the end, Chance apparently is shown to have to leave Shadow behind after all and returns home to the Seavers to reunite with Jamie, with Sassy following shortly thereafter.
They are constantly thought to be the secondary antagonists of the film, with Ashcan and Pete as the main antagonists. However, Jack and Ralph are still the main antagonists, because they had bigger plans than Ashcan and Pete.
In a frenzy, Chance breaks free from his carrier. Shadow and Sassy follow his lead, and together after eluding airport authorities, the animals find themselves in the city of San Francisco. With home on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, the trio set out to once again find their way back.
There are many shots of the cat being swept up by the fast-moving river as she heads for a very high waterfall. This was filmed using a fake cat. There are close-up shots of a frightened cat and then a shot of Sassy going over the waterfall. This scene was shot in many cuts.
In reality, however, filming was conducted in Oregon due to its varied topography, and diverse locations in Portland were used to substitute San Francisco. Eastern Oregon served as Bishop and the Eagle Cap Wilderness area resembled the Sierra Nevadas.
Fun Fact: In the Homeward Bound movies (1993-1996) one of the main characters is a Himalayan cat named Sassy. Cat Facts: The Himalayan can also be known as the Colourpoint Persian.
Chance gets curious about a porcupine and goes toward it but the porcupine flicks his tail into Chance's face and injures him badly. Porcupine needles stick out of Chance's face and Sassy tries to remove them. The porcupine scene was shot in cuts with a real porcupine and a fake dog.
However, the vast majority of animal actors earn far less, and can expect $4,000 to $10,000 a year. Also, agents and trainers will earn a commission, which is usually a flat rate per project.
