Four years after the original film, John Hammond (Attenborough) loses control of his company InGen to his nephew, Peter Ludlow (Howard). On the verge of bankruptcy, Ludlow intends to exploit dinosaurs from InGen's second island, Isla Sorna, with plans for a new dinosaur theme park in San Diego.
The novel version of Isla Sorna is also the location of the video game The Lost World: Jurassic Park. In the intro screen of the Human Hunter level a detailed map of Isla Sorna, with all the habitats, is shown.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park is set on Isla Sorna, an island 87 miles east of Isla Nublar. Also known as 'Site B' – a Jurassic Park compound facility and home to the surviving dinosaurs that were genetically engineered for the original park.
Set and released four years after Jurassic Park, The Lost World brings back Goldblum's Ian Malcolm and Attenborough's John Hammond to star alongside Julianne Moore's paleontologist Sarah Harding. The Lost World is set on a second island, Isla Sorna, where Hammond also cloned dinosaurs.
Are Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 the same island?
The topographic map of Isla Sorna was first used in the production of The Lost World, based on an earlier script. It was reused for the production of Jurassic Park III, even though it is known that the final topography and the size of the island doesn't match this map.
Why does Isla Sorna look different in Jurassic Park 3?
As explained in a Jurassic Park III's behind-the-scenes documentary, this change was intentional because the film's creators were striving for a more prehistoric and lush look for the backgrounds of its Isla Sorna Island.
This quartet of less pivotal locations is named after the gruesome fates of burning, drowning, crushing, and beheading respectively. The most important island of the five deaths, however, is the infamous Isla Sorna, named after the fate of hanging, stand the primary location for the first Jurassic Park sequel.
Essentially, Isla Sorna is no more. When InGen abandoned Site B after the incident seen in Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs were let loose upon the island. Instead of succumbing to the lysine deficiency that they were bred with, the animals thrived instead and developed a natural order.
"Isla Sorna" roughly means "Sarcasm Island" in Spanish. The research station of InGen, where the dinosaurs were created, was located on this island. It is the place where most of the movies, books and games about Jurassic Park take place. The island is much larger than Isla Nublar.
Being created illegally and against the knowledge of InGen or Masrani higher ups, it is unknown if the Spinosaurus and the other new dinosaurs were affected by or were even bred to include the lysine deficiency that affected the original dinosaurs. There is only one individual known to have lived on the island.
So what went wrong? If you ask the critics, about half of them would tell you that the film felt obligatory, that it lost most of what made the original so awe-inspiring in favor of more boilerplate monster movie trappings, even if those creature effects were outstanding.
Rexy was hatched in 1988 inside the InGen Compound of Isla Sorna, along with six more of her kind, where she spent the first year of her life inside the lab being taken care of by its workers before being transported to Isla Nublar to live in the Tyrannosaur Paddock as not just any attraction, but the main attraction ...
Since these islands existed in the pacific, they were prone to constant hurricanes and other severe weather. In The Lost World: Jurassic Park, John Hammond explained that Isla Sorna had been "wiped out" due to Hurricane Clarissa, which caused everyone to evacuate.
Like almost all of the original InGen's dinosaurs in the wild, Sornaraptor went extinct on Isla Sorna in 2004 due to the illegal experiments such as Macrobaryonyx (incorrectly called Spinosaurus) causing ecological disruptions, leaving only a few species of non-avian dinosaurs on Isla Sorna remaining alive today.
As of InGen's last population survey reported in 1993, there were six Tyrannosaurus rex living on Isla Sorna, meaning that a total of seven between both islands had survived up until that point. They were maintained together in a small paddock.
InGen created five Baryonyx in the InGen Compound in Isla Sorna. It was planned to live in its own paddock for Phase I of Jurassic Park, but never made it to Isla Nublar. Its paddock was located near a river, which could have supplied its residents with fish to eat.
The surviving dinosaurs were relocated to Isla Nublar for the opening of the Jurassic World theme park, leaving Sorna abandoned. Jurassic World Dominion shows the two adult Tyrannosaurus from Isla Sorna encountering the Tyrannosaurus from Isla Nublar.
Site C was an island located in the South Pacific close to 750 kilometres from the Five Deaths. It was around 24 square kilometres, slightly larger than Isla Nublar, and was an extra storage for dinosaurs after the storage pens on Isla Sorna became too crowded.
26 of these raptors were created on Sorna, 8 of which were moved to Isla Nublar for Jurassic Park. The pack lived in the self-titled Velociraptor Paddock. Eventually, a raptor that Jurassic Park Game Warden Robert Muldoon called "The Big One" was created and sent to live with the pack.
While explaining what happened, Hammond assures Malcolm that Cathy survived the attack and implies she didn't suffer any permanent physical injuries (though she's undoubtedly traumatized by the event).
Malcolm and Sarah are approached by paleontologist Richard Levine, who wants him to help find a "Lost World". Though Malcolm refuses the offer many times, he eventually relents and travels to Isla Sorna.
Spinosaurus was one of the few dinosaurs cloned in the Embryonics Administration lab, alongside Ankylosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Corythosaurus, sometime after 1997. As such, and being far after the Isla Nublar Incident, it was not a dinosaur on InGen's List and was not planned to be an attraction in Jurassic Park.
The majority of the film was captured in the picturesque settings of Hawaii, particularly on the northeastern shore of Molokai and at the renowned Jurassic Kahili Ranch on Kauai. These verdant and stunning locales imbued the movie with an authentic feel, portraying an island teeming with dinosaurs.
