Spoiler alert: C-3PO and R2-D2 make a cameo appearance at the end of the film and many were quick to point out that it doesn't tally with Star Wars: Epsiode IV: A New Hope. The pair watch the Rebel fleet departing for the final battle on Scarif from the base on Yavin IV.
The two droids crop up again in Rebels (Threepio still clueless, Artoo acting as an agent for Bail Organa) and in a random cameo in Rogue One, so they spend the intervening years belonging to/following the Organas, presumably being kept away from Coruscant at least so Vader won't notice them.

Why did C-3PO not recognize Leia?
Since Bail Organa had C-3PO's memory wiped previously in order to prevent him from spilling the secret of Leia's parentage, it could be that this was a semi-regular occurrence for the droid given he couldn't be trusted to keep quiet about things.
