When Bob and some Socs once again attack Johnny and Ponyboy, Johnny keeps his promise to himself and uses the switchblade to kill Bob. After Bob's death, many of the characters on both sides of the city gain a positive perspective on the uselessness of the violent rivalry between the two social classes.
In The Outsiders Johnny rambled about how he didn't know what to do and how scared he was especially when the Socs were drowning Ponyboy; which is why he stabbed Bob. Bob was with some of the other Socs when they tried to drown Ponyboy in a nearby fountain. Johnny became scared and didn't know what to do, and he took out his switchblade and stabbed Bob to death, and the other Socs ran away.
