They were her fathers droids after revenge of sith. R2d2 was assigned to his diplomatic ship and 3p0 to his personal entourage as a translator. Some time before the events of rogue one they 3p0 and the tantive 4 were given to Leia for her sentate duties and rebel activities.

During the Clone Wars, it was common practice to wipe the minds of astromech droids after every mission to avoid the risk of Separatists taking valued information. But Anakin remained staunchly against this idea for R2-D2, meaning the droid never had to worry about losing the memories of his past.

C-3PO lost those memories, but he remained with Han and Leia's family after Return of the Jedi, so can reasonably be assumed to have learned the truth by eavesdropping.
Three months after the Battle of Endor, Skywalker used the lightsaber during a mission to an Imperial research base on the planet Vetine in order to retrieve the last remaining fragment of a Force-sensitive tree. Skywalker gave his lightsaber to R2-D2 for hiding as they entered the Imperial base.
They aren't abbreviations — they're model and serial numbers. R2 is a second generation R-series astromech, serial number D2. * And C-3PO is a C-series protocol droid with the serial number 3PO.
One of the mysteries from the original trilogy that was fueled by the prequels is why R2-D2 never told Luke that Darth Vader was his father, as he actually knew Anakin Skywalker and witnessed his turn to the dark side.

He didn't recognize him because again, they all look the same & it was decades until he saw him again. There was no reason to believe he or R2 even existed anymore.
"Memory Loss" is a comic story featured in the thirteenth issue of the Star Wars Comic UK magazine, released in December of 2014. The story centers around C-3PO getting his memory wipe, as ordered by Bail Prestor Organa in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
While this issue provides evidence that Chewbacca hates C-3PO, Chewie seemed to get all of that pent-up rage out of his system when he gave Triple-Zero a proper beat-down.
Because he never owned a droid. R2-D2 was owned by Padme and later Anakin, and after that Bail Organa. R4-P17 was assigned to him to assist, not given to him to own. So he really never owned one.
