It is believed that it was his activities during the First Wizarding War and his time as an Auror that led to Moody losing a leg (replaced by a wooden prosthesis). His work also led to significant facial scarring, including losing a piece of his nose in his fight with Rosier.
You'll notice that Alastor Moody walks with a limp. This is because he lost one of his legs. That much is obvious but you might not know that it is believed he lost it in the First Wizarding War. All of Moody's many defects and scars are indicative of his combative and vigilant nature.
After he was brutally killed by Lord Voldemort, Moody's dead body tragically fell from his broom. Moody, who was also prepared for every type of dangerous situation, became the first victim in Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Mad-Eye Moody's death only occurred because of a betrayal, which makes it incredibly harrowing.

Was Moody a death eater?
He's the newest Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, a rough and aggressive man hiding a big secret. After the Triwizard Tournament, Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall figure out that he's Barty Crouch, Jr. in disguise, a sadistic and clever Death Eater on a mission to bring Voldemort back to life.
Barty Crouch Jr. drank Polyjuice Potion out of Moody's hipflask regularly, in imitation of the real Moody, and expressed many of Moody's normal eccentric habits. Doing this allowed him to impersonate Moody for almost the whole year without raising suspicion. All the while, Crouch did his part in Voldemort's plan.
Voldemort fired a Killing Curse when Mundungus Disapparated, and hit Moody in the face, killing him. Moody fell backwards off his broom, and about a thousand feet to the ground. Because half a dozen Death Eaters were on their own tail, Bill and Fleur could do nothing.
Remus Lupin died first. When Tonks arrived to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, Aberforth Dumbledore informed her that he last saw Remus battling Dolohov. As Dolohov was later confirmed to be the one that killed Remus, this means that Remus died first.
Hedwig's killer is not explicitly identified, so he/she may have appeared in other books, films or video games, but the only known appearance is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. A popular fan theory based on book canon suggests that Snape may have killed Hedwig.
Throughout the series, he is an anti-hero due to overly-cautious and paranoid side when it comes about his personal security, but anyone who dies fighting Lord Voldemort himself isn't a villain, that aside even though Moody may look crazy as all heck but he's not a bad guy.
Most "Harry Potter" fans would probably point to Alastor Moody, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin as examples of characters living with chronic health issues or disabilities in the Wizarding World.
He lost his eye, leg, half his nose and suffered extensive scarring, while fighting Death Eaters taking orders from Voldemort. He replaced his eye with a magical blue one (not a robotic one) and the lower part of his leg with a wooden peg.
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.
A fake eye belonging to Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody, the enchanted device had an electric blue iris and could rotate 360 degrees in the wearer's head. The eye was able to see through anything, including the back of Moody's own head and even invisibility cloaks, and was the reason that Moody became known as 'Mad-Eye.
Although the magical eye was seen as a cameo on the door of Dolores Umbridges office following Moody's death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, there is no indication of Umbridge receiving it as a gift.
As you can read, in Nymphadora, there is also the word Nymph, which in the Wizarding World, are small magical creatures who were also used as Christmas decorations (who even sang) in Beauxbatons. Nymphs were usually flirtatious, allowing Tonks to “hate” her name a bit.
In the EXCELLENT James Potter book series, by G. Norman Lippert, Tonks had already given birth to a boy before being killed in the Battle of Hogwarts. (The James Potter in the Lippert series is Harry Potter's son).

In the film version, Barty Crouch Jr. has the habit of licking his lips when threatened, in a snake-like way, to which he occasionally shows while under the disguise of Alastor Moody. This action led to him giving himself away to his father following the second task of the Triwizard Tournament.
Lucius Malfoy was one of the many Death Eaters who denied their allegiance to Voldemort after the end of the First Wizarding War and therefore would be a perfect example of the kind of person Barty Crouch Jr. hates the most.
At the end of the book, Moody is revealed as an impostor, Bartemius Crouch Junior, who had captured the real Moody one day before the start of term as part of a plan to deliver Harry to Voldemort to help his resurrection. Moody reappears in the series as an active Order of the Phoenix member but never actually teaches.
