The Morphling Saves Peeta To Help The Rebellion Some, like Johanna Mason from District 7 and Beetee Latier from District 3, make their intentions of alliance clear during the games. The female Morphling, however, appears almost coincidentally, and Peeta even mentions that they don't know her real name.
Fearing the loss of their most crucial propaganda assets, District 13's special forces launched a rescue mission into the Capitol— the first known rebel action to take place inside the city itself— aimed at freeing Peeta and Annie, as well as Johanna and Enobaria.
After witnessing both Finnick's, and Katniss' breakdowns, a rescue mission is staged. After distracting the Capitol with live propaganda, Peeta and the other captors are rescued. Katniss rushes to his side and is stunned when he attempts to strangle her.
Although it is not specified in the text what was the most successful treatment, Primrose Everdeen suggested "reverse hijacking," in which Peeta received a dose of calming morphling and was exposed to happy memories of Katniss.

Did Peeta know Katniss was faking?
Later, the two learn President Snow considered their actions to be an act of rebellion against the Capitol. After their last interview, in which the two continue to affect their romantic feelings for one another, Peeta comes to the realization Katniss has staged her love for him all along.
However, Peeta has been programmed/conditioned to hate Katniss, to believe that it's necessary to kill her. He chokes her, and if it weren't for someone else knocking him out, he would've killed Katniss.
Given that she is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Peeta, it's safe to assume that the Morphling was committed to the rebel cause. Like the other victors, she knows the power that Katniss has as a lightning rod for the rebellion, and she knows that Katniss will not help without Peeta.
It took time for Peeta to break out of that conditioning, and even when the possibility existed that Peeta could be a danger to Katniss, the two of them still elected to be together and build a future in a post-Hunger-Games world. Their love for one another is evident.
This suggests that Katniss loves Peeta, and not just because she feels that she owes him her life. Instead, Katniss wants to protect him and bring him home because she has strong feelings for him, even though she isn't sure what those feelings mean.

Katniss understands and asks if Peeta's been told about this, but Haymitch says he doesn't need to tell Peeta because "He's already there." As Katniss readies herself to take the stage, she realizes that, although she has made it out of the arena, the most dangerous part of the Hunger Games has begun.

If Katniss and Peeta had eaten the nightlock berries, they would've died, and there wouldn't have been any winners for the 74th Hunger Games. The rebellion would've moved forward with Katniss and Peeta as martyrs for the movement.

The films, trying to be as faithful to the source material as possible, naturally had to include Finnick's death as well. In this sense, Finnick is the perfect candidate for upping the stakes of the plot via his death, as his hope for a future with his partner Annie made his demise seem even more untimely.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
While a prisoner of the Capitol, Peeta was hijacked into believing that Katniss was not human, but in fact one of the Capitol's mutts. Conversely, Johanna Mason suggested that the Capitol's torture replaced Peeta with an "evil-mutt version" of himself. This sentiment was later echoed by Katniss.
As she approaches him, Peeta wraps his hands around her neck and throws Katniss around the room. He begins to strangle her, nearly killing her. He is wild, unable to be stopped, at least until Boggs knocks him out with a metal tray.
Toward the end of the novel, Katniss realizes that Haymitch has been keeping information from her and using her to help the rebellion, causing her to feel extremely betrayed. On the other hand, his goals are generally good ones.
