Tarzan was an incrediby gifted linguist. He learned to converse in many animal languages. His first human language of fluency was French, taught to him by a French officer that he encountered in the jungle.
Something even more important happens in the story, I think: The young man Tarzan teaches himself to read a language he does not know, using children's books he found left in the ruins of his own parents' house in the jungle. By looking at images and letters over and over, he learns to read English.
In the original 1914 Tarzan of the Apes novel, the hero learns how to read by inferring from children's books and eventually a dictionary he finds abandoned in his parents' cabin.
Tarzan eventually teaches himself to read by returning to the treehouse where he was born and finding some children's books that his parents brought from England. He later finds out who he really is (an English Lord!) and travels to England to visit his home, where he falls in love with a young woman called Jane.
