Some early sound films — such as the landmark 1927 film The Jazz Singer – used large soundtrack records which were played on a turntable mechanically interlocked with the projector.
Before the advent of viable sound technology, silent films were accompanied by live music. In even the humblest American and European movie theaters, there would have been a pianist employed to provide a soundtrack for the films, while the more opulent theaters could afford to house organs or employ full orchestras.

How did they put opening credits in films before digital editing? It was a photo-chemical technique called “burn-in”. The type would be laid out on a sheet and photographed. If the credits were to roll, then the sheet of type was “rolled” from bottom to top on a simple, mechanical device similar to a treadmill.
A combination of techniques were used. The simplest was to put the text onto a long sheet of paper, and literally to roll it past the camera. Layering was done using an optical printer. If the credits were done as white on black, then it wouldn't even have been necessary to use masks, though they could have.
