It shows a much stranger Earth where the continents have shifted, been flooded, and parts of Africa and the Middle East appear to be covered in snow, assuming they aren't clouds. Also, Japan no longer seems to exist and appears to be entirely submerged.
According to Jake, one of the main characters, the Earth is a "dying world" where humans have "killed their mother", suggesting that there is very little, if any, functioning natural ecosystem left.

What would Earth look like in Avatar?
Earth is divided to various nation-states and regions of the planet belonging to ever-shrinking forests and national parks. Earth was once fertile but by the 22nd century production consisted of protein farms.
Pandora's air is unbreathable due to high levels of carbon dioxide and trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide, posing a threat to humans. Humans use exopacks and avatar bodies to survive and explore Pandora's toxic atmosphere, but these solutions have limitations and challenges.
Official new Avatar concept art offered a glimpse of the unfortunate status of Earth. In Avatar: The Way of Water, General Frances Ardmore revealed that Earth is a dying planet by the year 2170. This was mainly due to many reasons such as deforestation, air pollution, famine, human overpopulation, and massive flooding.
Lifespan. Although lifespan data is incomplete, it is estimated Na'vi live 30% longer than the average human. Once born, Na'vi children mature more rapidly than humans.
Perhaps the most famous of the real locations that inspired Pandora, the park is comprised of dense forest, deep ravines and canyons, caves, and strange pillar-like rock formations unique to China and formed by erosion.
They briefly touch on this in the movie but I wish they elaborated a bit more on it. Humans can last 10 seconds breathing na'vi air, but na'vi can breathe human air for much longer than that but they still at some point need a mask to help them breathe regular human air.

But Kiri is the key to the Avatar saga. Cameron deliberately surrounds this character with Messianic imagery, complete with a miraculous conception; her mystical experience (or, as human science would put it, her epileptic seizure) is analogous to a baptism.
How do humans become Na'vi? Pandora's atmosphere is inhospitable to humans, so Earth scientists combined human and Na'vi DNA to create Na'vi clones. Humans can then remotely pilot those clones, which are called avatars.

At any time there is only a single Avatar, who is the spirit of the world incarnated into human form. When the Avatar dies, the Avatar Spirit is reincarnated into a newborn, who becomes the next Avatar. Each nation has a method of recognizing the new Avatar.
The main conflict in the movie involves trees. The antagonistic Resources Development Administration has come to Pandora to destroy the hometree that is important to the Omaticaya clan of Na'vi and claim the rare element Unobtanium from beneath the tree.
In some ways, he's the new Jake, a human caught up in the Na'vi world. But Spider has no avatar—a genetically engineered hybrid body used to freely roam Pandora—so he must navigate his habitat with an oxygen mask, always at a disadvantage compared with his blue friends.
Smell. The dewy aroma that first hits you when arriving at Pandora is a mix between a fresh-cut lawn and the smell after it rains on a warm day; however, the scents here change.
The most obvious distinction between an avatar and a genuine Na'vi is the number of fingers and toes. A Na'vi only has four digits, while the avatar body has five due to the human DNA. At the end of Avatar, Jake decides to transfer his consciousness to his avatar body permanently.
