Where does The Nun 2 fit in The Conjuring Universe?
The Nun II is the ninth overall installment in The Conjuring franchise but the third chronologically, with the Nun movies intended to serve as something of a prequel to the events of The Conjuring series.
The mid-credits scene of the movie sees the main Conjuring characters Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) receiving a call from Father Gordon, the character who facilitates many of their paranormal investigations.
Sometime in between the events of The Nun and The Conjuring 2, Valak returns with a vengeance against Sister Irene. It is revealed that right before Sister Irene banished Valak back to Hell, Valak tethered himself to Maurice in order to escape banishment.

She then has visions of people in Saint Lucy's bloodline, and one of those people was Lorraine Warren.
"The Nun 2" serves as a sequel to the 2018 prequel. "The Nun" followed the story of demon nun Valak's backstory, set in the 1950s. In this upcoming installment, the Demon Nun returns to confront Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and a new group of nuns.

That never seemed to make total sense given what has been established about Lorraine in the series. However, The Nun 2 has now confirmed that even though they're not the same person, the two characters are related.

We already know that Valak continues to haunt well into the 1970s. However, there is somewhat of a happy ending. The power of the nuns' faith seemingly separates Valak from Frenchie, and he appears as good as new. However, it's probably that Valak still lies within Frenchie but has just gone dormant.
Farmiga and Wilson briefly appeared as Ed and Lorraine in the 2018 spin-off film The Nun, focusing on the character of Valak in its "Demon Nun" form, who was the villain from The Conjuring 2.
The Warrens need to learn the name of the demon in order to stop Lorraine's visions and spare the family that is being haunted. In The Conjuring Universe, Lorraine Warren is portrayed as a medium. Valak's name typically appears around her to reinforce the strength of Lorraine's connection to the other side of the veil.
The Nun 2 ends with a climactic showdown between Irene and Valak in the chapel. Valak steals the Eyes of Saint Lucy from Irene and becomes more powerful than ever. Valak tries to kill Irene by setting her on fire, but Irene miraculously survives thanks to her faith and her connection to Saint Lucy.
Valak appears in multiple forms throughout the Conjuring movies, mainly taking the shape of a Catholic nun with eerie features. However, it has also appeared as the Crooked Man and its original form, Valak the Defiler.
As she's being burned, Irene realizes her abilities and her visions of the past mean that she's a direct descendant of Saint Lucy, and her understanding of that is one of the things that gives Irene the strength to overcome the demon nun in their final confrontation.
By the movie's conclusion, Frenchie (who reveals his name as Maurice) is unknowingly possessed by the demon Valak. The sequel sees Sister Irene discover Valak's possession of Frenchie and supposedly free him from the demonic force.
